Over his years with the company, Lightcap wore many hats. Lightcap was promoted to OpenAI&#8217;s COO role in April but later shifted out of that position to lead special projects within the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last few months, I\u2019ve been focused on the next horizon,\u201d Lightcap said in a note to OpenAI employees, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-08-11\/openai-executive-brad-lightcap-leaves-to-start-something-new\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>reported<\/u><\/a> by <em>Bloomberg<\/em>. \u201cI believe there are a few important things the world will need to get right as we enter this next period. Simo had gone on medical leave months earlier and said she ultimately decided to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/fidjissimo\/status\/2075353170927304861\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>leave<\/u><\/a> in July as a result of ongoing health issues. That very same month, OpenAI head ethicist Chlo\u00e9 Bakalar departed the company as well. While Bakalar&#8217;s departure apparently occurred last month, it was only recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e49dfb75-f841-4466-a577-f7aaff8779a0?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>revealed<\/u><\/a> in a <em>Financial Times<\/em> report.<\/p>\n<p>The tenures of the departing executives vary widely: Lightcap had been at the company since 2018, while Dresser leaving after just nine months.<\/p>\n<p>Are these OpenAI departures a sign of something more concerning going on within the company? OpenAI has dealt with multiple high-profile departures at once before. For example, chief marketing officer Kate Rouch <a href=\"https:\/\/adage.com\/executive-moves\/aa-openai-cmo-kate-rouch-exits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>left<\/u><\/a> in April of this year, shortly before OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/04\/17\/kevin-weil-and-bill-peebles-exit-openai-as-company-continues-to-shed-side-quests\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>lost<\/u><\/a> two research heads Kevin Weil and Bill Peebles.<\/p>\n<p>With that said, these recent departures are certainly something to keep tabs on. Concerns surrounding <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/tech\/openai-hugging-face-hack-worse-than-thought\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\"><u>OpenAI&#8217;s safety protocols<\/u><\/a> are at all-time highs following a few high-profile security incidents. Would these executives not want to be with OpenAI for this achievement?<\/p>\n<p>As of now, the departing former OpenAI executives haven&#8217;t shared exactly what spurred their decisions to leave the company or why they chose this particular moment.
