{"id":43024,"date":"2026-08-13T11:41:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T06:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=43024"},"modified":"2026-08-13T11:41:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T06:41:10","slug":"dga-iatse-urge-fast-track-on-paramount-wbd-legal-standoff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=43024","title":{"rendered":"DGA &#038; IATSE Urge Fast Track On Paramount-WBD Legal Standoff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two of Hollywood\u2019s most powerful unions have a message for California Attorney General <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/rob-bonta\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rob-bonta\" data-tag=\"rob-bonta\">Rob Bonta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/paramount\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paramount\" data-tag=\"paramount\">Paramount<\/a> Skydance CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/david-ellison\/\" id=\"auto-tag_david-ellison\" data-tag=\"david-ellison\">David Ellison<\/a>: Work it out ASAP, whether in court or otherwise. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/dga\/\" id=\"auto-tag_dga\" data-tag=\"dga\">DGA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/iatse\/\" id=\"auto-tag_iatse\" data-tag=\"iatse\">IATSE<\/a> sent a joint letter to the pair on Wednesday to \u201craise concerns about the potential for a prolonged timetable for the litigation\u201d and encourage them to make nice after <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/08\/paramount-warner-bros-trial-1237016438\/\">their legal standoff<\/a> over <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/02\/massive-merger-confirmed-paramount-and-wbd-reveal-details-1236738785\/\">the proposed merger<\/a> with Warner Bros Discovery has <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/08\/david-ellison-exit-california-wbd-merger-suit-1237031004\/\">Ellison threatening to pull his studio out of the state<\/a> completely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the very least, the unions \u2014 which jointly represent nearly 200,000 film and television workers across the U.S. and Canada \u2014\u00a0want the antitrust case sorted out in court sooner than the current March 2027 trial date. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile we have been consistent in our view that mergers, such as this one, historically offer few benefits to workers, we are also particularly concerned about the negative impact a delay in the decision regarding the proposed merger will have on our members and the industry at large,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cWe further believe the benefits and detriments of the proposed merger should be measured against the alternative outcomes if it is not approved, especially if the anti-competitive impacts of the proposed merger can be mitigated by a binding agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/08\/rob-bonta-up-ed-david-ellison-paramount-warner-bros-1237029737\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1237029737\">Don\u2019t Believe Paramount\u2019s Hype: California AG Rob Bonta Claims David Ellison Muddying WBD Merger Waters With Misinformation &amp; Side Deals; \u201cWe Intend To Win\u201d \u2013 Guest Column<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unions\u2019 letter argues that the current trial timeline would deal an irreparable blow to an already struggling domestic film and TV industry, particularly in California, where production is down more than 40%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It continues: \u201cAs our members struggle to find employment, the uncertainty surrounding the proposed merger is only making matters worse. We are aware of productions that have been put on hold or canceled altogether, leading to further reductions in available work for our members and other industry workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter also includes a list of proposed \u201cenforceable conditions\u201d that would allow the merger to continue without detrimental effects on the competitive market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/08\/paramount-warner-bros-democrats-david-ellison-1237031910\/\">Top House Judiciary Democrat Seeks Transcribed Interview With David Ellison Over Paramount-WBD Merger; Company Discussed Editorial Board For CNN<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conditions are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The maintenance of Paramount and WBD motion picture studios as separate studios, with each studio maintaining its own production, distribution, marketing and exhibition groups as distinct divisions;<\/li>\n<li>The production and distribution by each motion picture studio of a minimum of 15 theatrical films per year with an exclusive theatrical window of at least 45 days (preferably 60 days or more) before PVOD exploitation and 120 days before SVOD exhibition;<\/li>\n<li>An agreement that Paramount and WBD will continue to license theatrical films from third parties at no less than the average percentage of films licensed from third parties over the past five years (excluding 2020 and 2023);<\/li>\n<li>The same separate operational structure for Paramount and WBD\u2019s television studios as applied to the motion picture studios;<\/li>\n<li>The maintenance of HBO as a linear pay television channel that will continue to be available on third party platforms (e.g., MVPDs and Amazon video);<\/li>\n<li>A commitment to produce films and television shows in the United States at no less than the average percentage produced in the United States during the past five years (excluding 2020 and 2023);<\/li>\n<li>A commitment to license original content on the combined entity\u2019s linear channels and streaming platforms from third parties at no less than the average percentage of licensed original content during the past five years (excluding 2020 and 2023);<\/li>\n<li>A commitment that Paramount and WBD will continue to be sellers in the marketplace; and,<\/li>\n<li>A commitment that Paramount will continue to be based in Los Angeles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/07\/paramount-antitrust-lawsuit-wbd-state-attorney-generals-1236978956\/\">Paramount-WBD Merger Is Competition Killer, State Attorneys General Allege In Proposed Blockbuster Antitrust Action<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The message from the DGA and IATSE comes about a day after the news broke that Ellison had told senior executives that he would begin the process of moving Paramount out of California on October 1 if Bonta didn\u2019t attempt to settle the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/07\/state-antitrust-lawsuit-paramount-warner-bros-1236980723\/\">case he\u2019s leading with a group of 20 state AGs<\/a> to block the WBD acquisition. October 1 is the day Paramount starts to accrue a so-called ticking fee of $7 million a day agreed to in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/wbd\/\">WBD<\/a>\u00a0deal terms if the transaction hasn\u2019t closed by then. Paramount previously had <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/07\/paramount-warner-bros-lawsuit-trial-date-1237014622\/\">asked the judge for a November trial date<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra have both <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/08\/xavier-becerra-paramount-warner-bros-lawsuit-1237031600\/\">expressed desire for a settlement as well<\/a>. So far, Bonta has showed no signs of backing down, calling Ellison\u2019s threat \u201canother attempt to blackmail the state into letting an illegal deal through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/08\/wga-ellison-threat-leave-california-paramount-merger-suit-1237031575\/\">WGA Says David Ellison\u2019s Threat That Paramount Will Leave California Over AG\u2019s Antitrust Lawsuit \u201cProves The Danger Of Its Outsized Power\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hollywood <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/labor\/\" id=\"auto-tag_labor\" data-tag=\"labor\">labor<\/a> unions have all expressed varying degrees of wariness over the merger.
