Fuel prices did come close to setting a record four years ago, with the national average price of gas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/08\/12\/map-how-much-a-gallon-of-gas-costs-in-every-us-state.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sitting around $3.98 a gallon<\/a> on this day in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This news follows <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/5763589-iran-strikes-gas-prices-oil-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">months of turbulence<\/a> in the oil markets amid the effective closure of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/6022634-strait-of-hormuz-conflict-traffic-drops\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/6022634-strait-of-hormuz-conflict-traffic-drops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a> during the ongoing Iran war. Around 20 percent of the world\u2019s oil consumption flows through the strait on a daily basis, and it has been closed because of intermittent strikes and a U.S. naval blockade in the waterway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Iran and Oman said last week they were <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/6018567-iran-oman-strait-hormuz-deal-close\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/6018567-iran-oman-strait-hormuz-deal-close\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearing an agreement<\/a> to reopen the critical trading route.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, a top Iranian official <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/6018858-iran-demands-us-hormuz-negotiations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">laid out<\/a> the country\u2019s demands for the U.S. in negotiations to reopen the strait, including ending the naval blockade, lifting sanctions on Iran and requiring the U.S. to pay war reparations.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump responded to Iran\u2019s list <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/defense\/6021575-iran-oman-hormuz-strait-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">by demanding<\/a> that the country provide compensation \u201cfor all the people that they have killed and gravely wounded with their roadside bombs and many conflicts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday morning, Trump doubled down on his administration\u2019s opposition to Tehran\u2019s requests, writing on <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/117083017680231697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Truth Social<\/a> that the U.S. \u201chas total control over the Strait of Hormuz.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI THINK WE WILL KEEP IT!\u201d he continued. \u201cOur Naval Blockade is being called, by everyone, \u2018A WALL OF STEEL,\u2019 and there is nothing Iran can do about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media Inc.
