This was the warmest <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/07\/14\/us-heat-wave-forecast-where-record-breaking-temperatures\/\" target=\"_self\">July<\/a>\u2014and warmest month\u2014in the 132-year record, 0.1\u20130.2\u00b0F warmer than the previous records seen<strong> <\/strong>during the Dust Bowl in July 1936 and in July 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The reality of this <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/06\/29\/what-are-the-three-hottest-years-on-record-and-how-will-this-summer-compare-\/\" target=\"_self\">extreme heat<\/a> was experienced through three separate <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7296973\/more-heat-domes-climate-change\/\" target=\"_self\">heat dome<\/a> events, with several states, including Idaho, Utah, and Montana setting all time temperature records on July 12. Salt Lake City, UT, saw temperatures reach 109\u00b0F, while in Montana, Billings saw temperatures reach 111\u00b0F and Miles City 115\u00b0F. Wyoming recorded its warmest July and warmest month on record.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Extreme heat wasn\u2019t the only notable climate event Americans were dealing with. <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/07\/16\/risks-combined-bad-air-quality-extreme-heat-wildfires\/\" target=\"_self\">Wildfires<\/a> in eastern Oregon burned through 140,000 acres, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate. Federal fire resources were <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/07\/27\/us-wildfire-preparedness-level-5-what-that-means\/\">stretched thin<\/a> as other fires burned in Colorado, Washington, and beyond.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The smoke from the blazes, coupled with fires in neighboring Canada, worsened <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/a-week-of-smoky-skies-across-north-america\/\">air quality<\/a> for millions across the country. By mid-July, Chicago was reporting the worst air quality <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/local\/chicago-air-quality-the-worst-in-the-world-due-to-wildfire-smoke-data-shows\/3962532\/\">in the world<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though the month ranked as the third driest July of the 132-year record, with about 48.5% of the contiguous U.S. in drought, mid-month flash floods in Central Texas along the Guadalupe River brought over 28 inches of rainfall. The floods killed two people in the same area which saw catastrophic flooding over last year\u2019s July 4th weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The month showed just how varied the impacts of climate change can be. Residents in Texas and Oregon saw their homes damaged or destroyed by flooding or fire, while those in the Midwest found themselves digging out N95 masks to walk their pets or commute to work while facing some of the worst particulate air quality the region has seen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/22\/weather\/canada-wildfire-smoke-air-quality-aqi-how-bad.html\">over 25 years<\/a>.
