Photo by Miguel Gutierrez\/EPA<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><span class=\"story_dl\">July 11 (UPI) &#8212;<\/span> The death toll from the earthquakes that devastated Venezuela last month has risen to more than 4,300 people, a government official said Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The June 24 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/World-News\/2026\/06\/30\/latam-nasa-venezuela-assesment\/4171782830373\/\" target=\"_blank\">twin quakes in La Guaira<\/a> &#8212; the first a 7.2-magnitude shock, followed seconds later by another reaching magnitude 7.5 &#8212; were the biggest the country has seen in more than a century.\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/topic\/Jorge_Rodriguez\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Jorge Rodriguez\" class=\"tpstyle\">Jorge Rodriguez<\/a>, president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, on Saturday said at least 4,333 people were killed and more than 16,740 were injured.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Currently, more than 31,837 troops and 30,197 volunteers remain deployed across the country to ensure the welfare of the affected population,&#8221; said Rodriguez, the brother of interim President Delcy Rodriguez, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/v\/189cSW8rmN\/\" target=\"_blank\">social media post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As part of this effort, we have ensured medical assistance to 31,193 patients and ensured the distribution of more than 9,766 tons of food,&#8221; Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n<p>Some 18,437 people are currently living in makeshift camps for survivors, while more than 17,900 remain unhoused.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations this week launched an urgent appeal to raise $296 million in relief funding to assist as many as 1.3 million people.\n<\/p>\n<p>UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher visited La Guaira on Tuesday and met with a group of mothers whose children remained missing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those mothers asked me last night &#8216;is help coming?'&#8221; Fletcher said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2026\/07\/1167899\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have to show that we will answer the question from those mothers: help is coming,&#8221; Fletcher added. &#8220;Let&#8217;s demonstrate that global solidarity is as strong as ever and that we will stay the course.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"slide-image-container\" onclick=\"st_ss_sh158();\">\n\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cdnph.upi.com\/collection\/ph\/upi\/16709\/0899562b99ebc73d5ca302800bbeff3b\/This-week-in-Washington_1_1.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\" width=\"645\" height=\"431\"\/><\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"stph_caption\">Olympic canoeist David Hearn departs the Moultrie Courthouse after pleading not guilty to damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Thursday.
