The timing was seen as particularly objectionable, with <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/03\/us-news\/hate-crimes-soar-in-nyc-under-mamdani-even-as-major-crime-tumbles-overall\/\">hate crimes soaring under Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a> \u2014 and more than half of reported incidents targeting Jewish New Yorkers.<\/p>\n<p>The mag<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/x.com\/NYMag\/status\/2086786156533043513__;!!F0Stn7g!FfixNOU7pl5Ny4ttczh7iGSFAhYEqJ_q2VULAzzXoC3D9VA0igv7hCI6CMUQuA2a_iNFn5ow9pTLs6-znSfl$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> breathlessly ballyhooed<\/a> \u201ca blooming cultural ecosystem, led by young SWANA New Yorkers \u2026 born out of the resistance and protests in the months following October 7.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Monday\u2019s New York mag cover story titled \u201cHabibi City\u201d has been widely panned for its \u201cerasure of Jews\u201d with ties to Arab countries. <span class=\"credit\">New York Magazine<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Southwest Asia and North Africa community, \u201cbound together by shared values,\u201d was \u201cborn out of the pain of the genocide in Gaza,\u201d according to the outlet, a once-venerable cultural icon.<\/p>\n<p>Critics accused the mag of repeatedly noting Israel\u2019s response to Oct. 7 while ignoring the actual terror massacre of that day, which left 1,200 dead and 251 abducted into Hamas hell deep inside the bowels of Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not going to pay for a subscription to a magazine I\u2019ve long loved \u2013 and written for \u2013 that actively seeks to negate Jewish history and identity,\u201d journalist Jordana Horn told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Her cancellation over the 31-page, six-part package included a blistering message: \u201cYou\u2019re deliberately stoking the flames of anti-Jewish sentiment in this city and I\u2019m not going to help pay for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jewish groups were livid over the main piece sympathizing with SWANA New Yorkers who still \u201cface xenophobia, Islamophobia, and Zionism \u2014 along with the repercussions of speaking out against them,\u201d in what they branded a callous comparison of Zionism to menacing forms of hatred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTreating Zionism as though it belongs in a list of identity-based hatreds erases what it actually means to millions of Jews: the belief that Jews, like other peoples, have a right to national self-determination and safety,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Db6hZWrD8Ia\/__;!!F0Stn7g!FfixNOU7pl5Ny4ttczh7iGSFAhYEqJ_q2VULAzzXoC3D9VA0igv7hCI6CMUQuA2a_iNFn5ow9pTLs3OVgy9I$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> wrote AIPAC<\/a>, the American-funded pro-Israel lobbying group that\u2019s become a boogeyman for the ghoulish political fringes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Red paint and anti-Israel phrasing are seen on the door and windows of the restaurant Miriam in Park Slope, Brooklyn, on Jan. 26, 2025.
