{"id":40969,"date":"2026-08-12T14:16:28","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T09:16:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=40969"},"modified":"2026-08-12T14:16:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T09:16:28","slug":"lee-daniels-nadine-labaki-marina-abramovic-liberatum-pioneer-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=40969","title":{"rendered":"Lee Daniels, Nadine Labaki, Marina Abramovic Liberatum Pioneer Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/lee-daniels-empire-worst-experience-money-college-1235992414\/\"><em>Empire<\/em> creator Lee Daniels<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/cannes-nadine-labaki-capernaum-resisting-lure-hollywood-1110438\/\"><em>Capernaum<\/em> director Nadine Labaki<\/a>, and avant-garde artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/marina-abramovic\/\" id=\"auto-tag_marina-abramovic_1\" data-tag=\"marina-abramovic\">Marina Abramovic<\/a> will be honored at this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/venice-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_venice-film-festival_1\" data-tag=\"venice-film-festival\">Venice Film Festival<\/a> with the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/liberatum\/\" id=\"auto-tag_liberatum_1\" data-tag=\"liberatum\">Liberatum<\/a> Pioneer Awards. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe awards, presented by Pablo Ganguli\u2019s Liberatum cultural diplomacy organization, recognize artists whose work \u201chas challenged convention, broken down systemic barriers, expanded artistic boundaries, redefined the possibilities of their respective fields and promoted the importance of preserving human dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe awards presentations will take place in Venice on Sept 6 and 7 as part of the inaugural Liberatum Art &amp; Cinema, a new multidisciplinary programme staged to mark the cultural group\u2019s twenty-fifth anniversary. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnnouncing this year\u2019s winners on Wednesday, Liberatum said it was recognizing Daniels, director for the \u201cbold, uncompromising filmmaking that has consistently brought subjects largely absent from mainstream American film and television into major public view, including <em>Precious<\/em>, <em>The Butler<\/em> and <em>Empire<\/em>.\u201d Daniels\u2019 focus on the depiction of \u201cBlack life, trauma, sexuality and family with candour, at scale and without dilution,\u201d the group said, \u201chas opened space within the industry for narratives previously considered commercially untenable. His selection reflects Liberatum\u2019s recognition of<br \/>filmmakers who have used popular form to carry unpopular truths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLabaki is being recognised for her feature films, including <em>Where Do We Go Now? <\/em>(2011) and <em>Capernaum<\/em> (2018). Both premiered in Cannes, with the latter and winning the Jury Prize, en route to an Oscar nomination for best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/international\/\" id=\"auto-tag_international_1\" data-tag=\"international\">international<\/a> feature. The Lebanese director, Liberatum said, \u201chas carried stories from Lebanon and the wider Middle East to international audiences on their own terms\u201d by combining \u201cdocumentary rigour with narrative craft to address displacement, poverty and conflict without sentimentality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Pioneer honor for Serbian performance artist Abramovi\u0107, famous for her landmark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/sundance-marina-abramovi-artist-is-present-285039\/\">\u201cThe Artist Is Present\u201d (2010) <\/a>piece in which she sat silently at a table for more than 700 hours over nearly three months, inviting visitors to sit opposite her and maintain eye contact is in recognition for establishing \u201cperformance art as a discipline in its own right and expanded its vocabulary further than any of her contemporaries,\u201d the group said. \u201cAbramovi\u0107\u2019s practice has repeatedly used duration, presence and physical risk to examine the relationship between artist and audience, and her influence now extends well beyond performance art into the wider language of contemporary visual culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAbramovi\u0107 this year also has a major solo exhibition at Venice\u2019s Gallerie dell\u2019Accademia, the first living woman artist to receive the honor in the institution\u2019s 250-plus year history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPrevious winners of the Liberatum Pioneer Award include actor Angela Bassett, Brazilian anthropologist Ivete Sacramento, and actor Ellen Burstyn, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lifestyle\/lifestyle-news\/ellen-burstyn-liberatum-pioneer-award-venice-1235992952\/\">was honored at the Venice film festival in 2024<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Empire creator Lee Daniels, Capernaum director Nadine Labaki, and avant-garde artist Marina Abramovic will be honored at this year\u2019s Venice Film Festival with the 2026 Liberatum Pioneer Awards.
