Their allegation that prosecutors and the court had collaborated in \u201chand-choosing the reporters permitted to attend the proceeding\u201d was a fairly eye-popping one, and the government responded in kind, offering a glimpse of the temperature around the looming trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe defense\u2019s baseless accusation\u2026appears to be nothing more than an attempt to spread misinformation about this case and delegitimize the proceedings,\u201d prosecutor Joel Seidemann wrote in a response filing. (Seidemann previously worked under Mangione\u2019s attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo when she served as chief assistant district attorney of the Manhattan District Attorney\u2019s Office, adding an element of intrigue to their clashes for the scores of onlookers who have come to treat the legal personalities in the case as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/story\/luigi-mangione-agnifilo-lawyers-cult-following\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">cult figures<\/a> in their own right.) In his view, \u201cthe media attention surrounding this case\u2014and the efforts of some of the defendant\u2019s supporters both to intimidate witnesses and to interfere with the functioning of the jury\u2014will place extraordinary pressure on witnesses and potential jurors alike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Both Agnifilo and her husband Marc, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/style\/story\/alexander-brothers-jury-pool-defense-lawyers\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">celebrity defense lawyer<\/a> joining her on Mangione\u2019s behalf, appeared to be in good spirits as they arrived in the courtroom to settle the dispute. Karen offered a hearty \u201cgood morning\u201d as she walked towards the defense table, taking a moment before the judge arrived to swipe a few brushes through her hair. Marc strode over to the prosecution\u2019s table with a smile, saying, \u201cI just wanted to say hello.\u201d But Judge Gregory Carro, a stern Rudy Giuliani appointee, had a decidedly less sunny tone as he addressed their concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThere has never been a discussion or decision by this court to exclude or limit public or the press in these proceedings,\u201d Carro said. \u201cQuite the opposite is true.\u201d He described Mangione\u2019s attorneys\u2019 objections as \u201cwithout merit and a reckless mischaracterization of the efforts undertaken by this court.\u201d There would be an overflow room after all, and \u201cit had nothing to do with your objections,\u201d Carro explained to Marc. (Carro also ruled that the jury in the trial will be anonymous, a rarity typically reserved for high-profile trials.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Addressing Seidemann in the same building where Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/story\/donald-trump-trial-verdict\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">criminal trial<\/a> took place in 2024, Carro noted that this wasn\u2019t the court\u2019s \u201cfirst rodeo.\u201d The prosecution needn\u2019t worry about an overflow room, he said, where phone use wouldn\u2019t be permitted\u2014\u201cwe have that all under control.\u201d (As if on cue, a reporter\u2019s phone then began to ring. She was lightly reprimanded by a court officer but allowed to stay.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Carro wished the attorneys a good rest of their summers as he signed off for the day and Mangione shuffled back through the side door of the courtroom. The Mangionistas and traditional news reporters alike waited outside 100 Centre Street to catch a glimpse of the Agnifilos.
