Maybe it\u2019s the way we eat our pie, how we stack our dishes, or some other inexplicable little routine. We might even recognize these habits for what they are, whether plain irritating or just a little gross, and know we should probably behave differently in company. But when you\u2019re in a relationship, over time, we tend to, well, let it all hang out: our quirks, messiness, and less-than-ideal habits. But surely there\u2019s a line?<\/p>\n<p>If there is, these men don\u2019t seem to have gotten the memo. From weeks of laundry piled high for \u201csomeone else\u201d to tackle to downright puzzling (if not nonexistent) waste-disposal techniques to just plain inconsiderate behavior, their wives and girlfriends have their hands full. So they did the logical thing: They turned to the internet, entertaining us with a glimpse of what happens when domestic bliss starts looking a little more like domestic chaos, one mildly infuriating (and sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/annoying-husbands-boyfriends\/\" class=\" staff-link\">suspiciously convenient<\/a>) \u201cshortcoming\u201d at a time.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"open-list-item open-list-block clearfix text-block \"> <span id=\"list-text-3\"><\/p>\n<p>No matter how much you love your partner, there are bound to be some things they do that irk you. After all, relationships inevitably involve a little give-and-take, and no one is perfect. Occasionally, yes, there will be a wobble. And that\u2019s not necessarily a bad thing. <\/p>\n<p>As couples therapist Dr. Kyle Killian, author of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Interracial-Couples-Intimacy-Therapy-Crossing\/dp\/0231132956?tag=vilofjoy-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\" staff-link\">Interracial Couples, Intimacy, and Therapy: Crossing Racial Borders<\/a><\/em>, writes for Psychology Today, being annoyed by your partner doesn\u2019t necessarily mean you\u2019re incompatible or that your relationship is in trouble. Rather, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/za\/blog\/intersections\/202309\/what-it-means-when-your-partner-really-annoys-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\" staff-link\">suggests<\/a>, \u201cIf you really bug each other\u2014and sometimes it is actually funny how ridiculous something seems to us\u2014this might actually bode well.\u201d Annoyance is the opposite of apathy, after all. So occasional annoyance could be seen as a sign that the relationship still has some \u201cenergy\u201d or \u201csparks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/div>\n<div class=\"open-list-item open-list-block clearfix text-block \"> <span id=\"list-text-6\"><\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are the garden-variety habits that inevitably show up once a relationship has graduated from fairytale to reality: things like not replacing the milk, licking a plate clean, scrolling at dinner, or leaving cupboard doors open. They\u2019re a little less attractive, sure, but they\u2019re <em>human<\/em>, and some of us can live with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/disgusting-habits-spouse-overlook\/\" class=\" staff-link\">them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4227304\/relationship-advice-annoyed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\" staff-link\">writing<\/a> for TIME, Kira Asatryan, relationship coach and author of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Stop-Being-Lonely-Friendships-Relationships\/dp\/160868380X?tag=vilofjoy-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\" staff-link\">Stop Being Lonely<\/a><\/em>, suggests that being comfortable enough to show these kinds of quirks can actually be a good sign. \u201cExpressing one\u2019s authentic self\u2014oddities and all\u2014is a sign of a healthy level of comfort in a relationship,\u201d she writes.<\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/div>\n<div class=\"open-list-item open-list-block clearfix text-block \"> <span id=\"list-text-9\"><\/p>\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean every small annoyance should simply be tolerated\u2014or, at the other end of the scale, that it means the relationship is doomed. As Killian notes, \u201cPartners\u2019 rough edges and differences in personalities and habits can be sources of friction and shine a light on areas where relationship improvements can be made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/infuriating-wives-girlfriends\/\" class=\" staff-link\">irritating habits<\/a> may be worth addressing because small adjustments can benefit both partners. \u201cInstead of doomsday, it might mean there are opportunities for growth, and there\u2019ll be plenty of fresh food in the fridge and nonexpiring Spam in the pantry (in bulk), for the remainder of your journey together,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/div>\n<div class=\"open-list-item open-list-block clearfix text-block \"> <span id=\"list-text-12\"><\/p>\n<p>So the problem isn\u2019t that our partners occasionally drive us crazy. It\u2019s what happens when those little things start piling up\u2014when those little irritations become persistent and start to really get under our skin. In these cases, Dr. Sabrina Romanoff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.self.com\/story\/one-thing-partner-annoying-habits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\" staff-link\">tells<\/a> SELF\u2019s Jenna Ryu, it\u2019s best to address them early, before resentment builds and you snap. <\/p>\n<p>For these conversations to be productive, Romanoff recommends focusing less on what your partner is doing wrong and more on how their behavior affects you and what you\u2019d like them to do differently. In other words, don\u2019t just criticize\u2014make a specific, actionable request and focus on finding a solution together.<\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/div>\n<div class=\"open-list-item open-list-block clearfix text-block \"> <span id=\"list-text-15\"><\/p>\n<p>For instance, rather than saying, \u201cIt\u2019s so annoying that you don\u2019t clean up after yourself and I\u2019m stuck washing your dirty dishes,\u201d Ryu offers a more constructive alternative: \u201cI\u2019ve noticed the dishes pile up in the sink. How about we clean them together right after we eat, so they don\u2019t linger and start to smell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, that approach only works if both partners are actually willing to engage with the problem. Because there\u2019s a big difference between genuinely not knowing how to do something and repeatedly doing it badly enough that someone else has to take over. Maybe it\u2019s the laundry, the dishes, the trash\u2014or some other seemingly simple task that somehow becomes someone else\u2019s problem. When \u201cI don\u2019t know how\u201d or \u201cyou do it quicker, better, faster\u201d becomes a recurring excuse, there\u2019s a name for it: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/worst-cases-weaponized-incompetence\/\" class=\" staff-link\">weaponized incompetence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/div>\n<div class=\"open-list-item open-list-block clearfix text-block \"> <span id=\"list-text-18\"><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve likely seen the term thrown around on social media over the past few years, but it\u2019s not without its problems. And there\u2019s an important (and perhaps reassuring) distinction clinical psychologist Dr. Jelena Kecmanovic points out in a piece she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wellness\/2025\/12\/07\/weaponized-incompetence-relationships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\" staff-link\">wrote<\/a> for The Washington Post: \u201cNot all incompetence is intentional.\u201d Someone might genuinely lack a particular skill, especially if their partner has traditionally taken care of that task. But being unable to do something and being unwilling to learn how are two very different things. <\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/div>\n<div class=\"open-list-item open-list-block clearfix text-block \"> <span id=\"list-text-21\"><\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s another important distinction: doing something differently isn\u2019t the same as doing it badly. As Kecmanovic puts it, \u201cBoth partners should give each other space to do the job as they see fit, even if the kids end up in mismatched outfits or the kitchen doesn\u2019t look exactly the same.\u201d As long as the dishwasher doesn\u2019t have to be repacked altogether, it\u2019s okay if things are stacked a little differently.<\/p>\n<p>The problem comes when \u201cdifferent\u201d becomes \u201cI\u2019ll do it so badly you won\u2019t ask me again,\u201d or when someone repeatedly avoids the task altogether. I regularly (try to) clean shoes every few months. Ridiculous behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Edit: to clarify, we\u2019re both men(gay). I enjoy cleaning! Love language is acts of service and I like clean shoes. Husband used to run, but hasn\u2019t in years, prior to covid. I\u2019m not sure why he does this, I\u2019ve asked him.
