John Larson (D-Conn.) was unseated Tuesday by his primary challenger, former Hartford Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/07\/30\/john-larson-luke-bronin-democratic-primary\" target=\"_blank\">Luke Bronin<\/a>, according to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it matters: <\/strong>Larson is the 7th House Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/08\/05\/house-democrats-primary-shri-thanedar-2026\" target=\"_blank\">ousted in their primary this year<\/a>. Only one other election cycle in the 21st century has seen this many incumbent losses in primaries.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<ul>\n<li>Bronin&#8217;s challenge to Larson came after the 78-year-old incumbent suffered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/02\/11\/john-larson-freeze-speech-congress-age\" target=\"_blank\">widely publicized freeze-up<\/a> during a House floor speech that he later said was the result of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/02\/12\/john-larson-seizure-speech-house-democrat\" target=\"_blank\">complex partial seizure<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Bronin earned the support of the state Democratic Party, while Larson had the backing of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and the rest of Connecticut&#8217;s congressional delegation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>State of play: <\/strong>Bronin, 47, proved to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/10\/06\/john-larson-luke-bronin-fundraising-democrats\" target=\"_blank\">prodigious fundraiser<\/a>, bringing in $3.1 million as of July 22 to Larson&#8217;s $2.7 million over the same period, according to Federal Election Commission filings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bronin also had the most support from an outside backer: VoteVets, a group that works to elect Democratic military veterans, said in FEC filings it spent over $1 on ads boosting the retired Navy intelligence officer.<\/li>\n<li>Larson&#8217;s top outside spender was Defend the Vote, a Democratic group whose stated mission is to <a href=\"https:\/\/wedefendthevote.org\/goals\/\" target=\"_blank\">elect a &#8220;pro-democracy&#8221; majority<\/a> in Congress. They spent just over $500,000.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Between the lines: <\/strong>Bronin ran a campaign that focused heavily on the need for generational change in Congress and the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;John Larson is a good man, but he&#8217;s been in Congress since the 90s. The stakes are just too high to keep doing the same thing,&#8221; Bronin said in <a href=\"https:\/\/platform.adimpact.com\/viewer\/cfe55cd8-33cd-400e-a90b-be6a07bab4b9\" target=\"_blank\">one ad<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Both men also tried to burnish their progressive credentials at a time when Democrats are increasingly favoring progressives in safe-seat primaries.<\/li>\n<li>The progressive Working Families Party, which spent about $50,000 supporting Larson, ran an <a href=\"https:\/\/platform.adimpact.com\/viewer\/847d7a19-f6bb-4033-b705-6fb6f9908658\" target=\"_blank\">ad<\/a> labeling Bronin a &#8220;corporate Democrat&#8221; who was &#8220;using us for political ambition.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Zoom out: <\/strong>Larson is part of a growing cohort of older Democrats who have lost to significantly younger primary opponents this year, including Reps. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/houston\/2026\/05\/27\/houston-christian-menefee-al-green-primary-runoff-results\" target=\"_blank\">Al Green<\/a> (D-Texas), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/07\/01\/melat-kiros-colorado-degette-democrats-reaction\" target=\"_blank\">Diana DeGette<\/a> (D-Colo.), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/06\/24\/espaillat-darializa-chevalier-ny-13-results\" target=\"_blank\">Adriano Espaillat<\/a> (D-N.Y.) and Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While DeGette, Espaillat and Thanedar all lost to challengers who ran to their left, Green and Larson both positioned themselves as stalwart progressives against opponents who focused on their age.<\/li>\n<li>Reps. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/04\/23\/david-scott-democrats-death-age-primary-matsui\" target=\"_blank\">Doris Matsui<\/a> (D-Calif.) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/06\/01\/california-election-matsui-thompson-sherman\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Thompson<\/a> (D-Calif.) both face November run-offs with younger Democratic rivals.<\/li>\n<li>Other members who are 70 or older, including Reps.
