McCarthy\u2019s status with the Vikings after <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/11\/sports\/vikings-make-qb-decision-in-kyler-murray-jj-mccarthy-training-camp-battle\/\">naming Kyler Murray as the team\u2019s starting quarterback<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota head coach emphasized that McCarthy\u2019s development remains a work in progress despite the flashes he has shown during his short time in the league.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s still a guy that\u2019s only played 10 games,\u201d O\u2019Connell told reporters. \u201cHe\u2019s shown improvement off of last year. Even in this training camp with the work he\u2019s put in and his comfort level, just growing a little bit day in and day out. expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs he knows, he\u2019s holding the pen on his story and we\u2019re gonna support him and try to just help him continue to improve at the most difficult position in sports. He\u2019s gotta also understand, this isn\u2019t just a long-term mindset, which we want to have always for a player of his caliber and a young player like him but it could be an immediate response needed. J.J.\u2019s the kind of guy that\u2019ll be ready to rock and roll. I know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, hasn\u2019t lived up to the hype he had coming out of Michigan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After missing the 2024 season with a torn meniscus, McCarthy appeared in 10 games last year, going 6-4 while throwing 11 touchdown
