{"id":39832,"date":"2026-08-12T02:28:47","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T21:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=39832"},"modified":"2026-08-12T02:28:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T21:28:47","slug":"how-trans-and-nonbinary-filmmakers-are-taking-control-of-their-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=39832","title":{"rendered":"How Trans and Nonbinary Filmmakers Are Taking Control of Their Stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/vera-drew\/\" id=\"auto-tag_vera-drew\" data-tag=\"vera-drew\">Vera Drew<\/a> made her ambitious debut film \u201cThe People\u2019s Joker,\u201d she didn\u2019t know if anyone else in the world would understand her deeply personal superhero movie parody about transitioning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe first time she met a trans person who connected with the film after a public screening was a \u201cmindblowing\u201d experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThere had been other <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/trans-directors\/\" id=\"auto-tag_trans-directors\" data-tag=\"trans-directors\">trans directors<\/a>, but something that was that fiercely independent and coming at it from this personal perspective of a trans coming out story \u2013 I didn\u2019t really know if there was any sort of audience for that,\u201d Drew tells <em>Variety<\/em>. \u201cI kind of just thought I was making a movie for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLike many trans and nonbinary filmmakers making original, often genre-leaning films that resonate with queer audiences, Drew began connecting with other like-minded creatives after screening \u201cThe People\u2019s Joker\u201d at festivals like the Toronto International Film Festival and Fantastic Fest. Outside of online spaces, LGBTQ+ festivals like Outfest and Frameline have provided the necessary third spaces for this filmmaking community to grow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFrom <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/jane-schoenbrun\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jane-schoenbrun\" data-tag=\"jane-schoenbrun\">Jane Schoenbrun<\/a> (\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/teenage-sex-and-death-at-camp-miasma\/\" id=\"auto-tag_teenage-sex-and-death-at-camp-miasma\" data-tag=\"teenage-sex-and-death-at-camp-miasma\">Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma<\/a>\u201d), <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/louise-weard\/\" id=\"auto-tag_louise-weard\" data-tag=\"louise-weard\">Louise Weard<\/a> (\u201cCastration Movie\u201d), Alice Maio Mackay (\u201cThe Serpent\u2019s Skin\u201d), Avalon Fast (\u201cCamp\u201d) to Drew (\u201cThe People\u2019s Joker\u201d), the past five years have brought this emerging group of trans and nonbinary artists into the spotlight. They often appear in each other\u2019s projects and, for the most part, are all navigating the challenges of making art entirely outside the traditional studio system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSchoenbrun, for instance, appears in the third \u201cCastration Movie\u201d and Jack Haven\u2019s short films. Weard has a role in \u201cCamp Miasma,\u201d while Fast acts in both \u201cCastration Movie\u201d and \u201cThe Serpent\u2019s Skin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cYou get these communities together where we cannot only cheer each other on, but inform each other\u2019s work and inspire one another,\u201d Drew says. \u201cNot every filmmaker has that in this dystopian version of Hollywood that the last generation of filmmakers manifested for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThese artists are working in an industry that continually struggles to create space for trans and nonbinary filmmakers, from financing to theatrical distribution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA recent <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/2026-where-we-are-in-film\/\" target=\"_blank\">GLAAD report<\/a> titled \u201cWhere We Are in Film\u201d found that there were zero trans characters featured in 2025 releases from the top 10 U.S. distributors; this lack of representation, in large part, comes from a lack of trans directors making big budget movies. That representation shrinks even more when looking at trans directors of color.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cExecutives have to step up, not only to increase representation, but to maintain relevance with audiences. Gen Z is largely saving the box office and movie theaters, and they are the queerest generation of all time,\u201d says Raina Deerwater, GLAAD\u2019s associate director of entertainment research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s a homogeneity to the type of trans filmmaker we\u2019re seeing succeed right now that\u2019s not 100% reflective of the diversity of the trans community,\u201d Weard adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOne trans filmmaker who has made strides with bigger-budget features is Schoenbrun. I\u2019m really so proud of the movies I make, the way that I make them and the people I make them with. But being the only trans filmmaker making movies at this budget level \u2014 that\u2019s not my fault, but it would be a lot better, in general, if I wasn\u2019t the only one,\u201d Schoenbrun says, explaining that they\u2019ve felt \u201cjealous\u201d when watching directors like Mackay make movies with \u201ca bunch of other trans people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAnd then even saying that out loud to you in <em>Variety<\/em> feels like, what an asshole thing to do! I could do that if I wanted to do that, but I\u2019m choosing not to. I\u2019m choosing to participate in this noxious system without any other people like me,\u201d they add. \u201cI have carved out a path that\u2019s different from a lot of my trans peers, and that should just be part of the conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe film that connects this circle of trans and nonbinary filmmakers most closely is Weard\u2019s \u201cCastration Movie\u201d anthology, the third of which explores what happens in a relationship after Izzy\u2019s (Fast) partner comes out as trans \u2014 an experience that has rarely been depicted in film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThroughout all three \u201cCastration\u201d chapters, Weard says she has been drawn to \u201cugly perspectives\u201d in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWith this one, the idea of the turf and the type of person who would claim feminism at the expense of trans people\u2019s rights is a perspective very distant from mine,\u201d Weard says. \u201cIn researching the role, it came down to this idea of equating male violence with this fear of trans people, where these women might see a trans woman as the scary men in their life who have preyed on them in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWeard\u2019s DIY-style anthology has become a crucial epicenter of contemporary trans artists, featuring everyone from Schoenbrun to Drew to Mackay in various roles. Lilly Wachowski even executive produced the third chapter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWeard also embraces the perspective of a trans character that\u2019s \u201chard to understand\u201d at times. \u201cShe\u2019s this totem for the embarrassing start of transition that I think a lot of trans people go through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs one of the most prolific trans filmmakers making movies right now, Schoenbrun takes the initiative to have emerging directors and writers shadow on set. Eva Victor, for instance, shadowed on \u201cI Saw the TV Glow\u201d before going on to write and direct their award-winning indie breakout \u201cSorry, Baby,\u201d while \u201cThe Serpent\u2019s Skin\u201d and \u201cOur Effed Up World\u201d director Mackay shadowed on \u201cCamp Miasma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMackay says, \u201cWe\u2019re not competing with each other; we\u2019re all trying to do our own thing but have this community to lean back and be supported on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter making \u201cWe\u2019re All Going to the World\u2019s Fair,\u201d which put Schoenbrun on the map in 2021 after Sundance, they have intentionally placed \u201cmore boundaries\u201d around them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cEven while I have a circle of really close friends and artists who I admire and love and want to be collaborating with and supporting in this way, there\u2019s something that\u2019s always going to be a little transactional about it,\u201d Schoenbrun says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThanks to the Fatales Forward program, emerging filmmaker Sepi Mashiahof was matched with Schoenbrun as a mentor. Since then, Mashiahof worked as Schoenbrun\u2019s assistant on \u201cI Saw the TV Glow\u201d and was promoted to script coordinator on \u201cCamp Miasma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhat I learned from Jane is how much they love and are so open and receptive to the ideas of the people around them,\u201d Mashiahof says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHaven, who starred in both \u201cI Saw the TV Glow\u201d and \u201cCamp Miasma\u201d and has directed multiple short films, explains that they\u2019ve seen Schoenbrun take \u201cgreat pains\u201d to raise money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis comes from explaining themselves, through working really diligently to connect with financiers about this universal pain that they work into their films, and I think there\u2019s something in it that cannot be bought or sold,\u201d Haven says. \u201cOf course, we are connected to an industry that is about making money, that is about self-sustaining as artists, but ultimately it becomes more and more about what cannot be bought or sold and what is eternal to us as artists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSchoenbrun\u2019s experience as an openly trans filmmaker is deeply reflected in their work, particularly with the journey that \u201cCamp Miasma\u201d protagonist Kris (Hannah Einbinder) takes in fighting to get her vision understood by studio executives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSchoenbrun explains: \u201cAnytime I\u2019m on a Zoom with Hollywood, with people who I\u2019m maybe going to work with on something, or doing a general, my transness is going to be in the room. Even if they have the best intentions, it\u2019s a particular minority experience in that there are no other trans people on the other side of the call. And if there is, it\u2019s queer assistant, right? And they\u2019re not actually being given any power, they\u2019re there in a tokenized way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDrew says she\u2019d \u201clove\u201d to make a studio movie, for one. But getting a second feature off the ground has proven difficult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMy first movie was a huge critical success, got a ton of buzz out of its festival run, had a Streisand effect because of its legal baggage, it won multiple awards,\u201d Drew says. \u201cIn another era, that probably could have meant that Disney or Paramount or fucking Star Wars, one of these people would be coming to me and saying, \u2018We have this thing we want you to shepherd.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe continues: \u201cI don\u2019t know if I\u2019m just too aggressive and trans and hairy-arm pitted for that to happen, but I do know that didn\u2019t happen to me \u2014 I assume kind of partially because of media consolidation, also because of the subject matter of my first movie. And the fact that I made a movie that was very explicitly about my experience as a trans woman and as an artist, which is another thing that makes it quasi-inaccessible to a major studio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDrew\u2019s next feature, the horror comedy \u201cTrandemic,\u201d recently earned a $25,000 cash grant from the Duplass Brothers\u2019 inaugural Found Footage Feature Fund award, and has reportedly already attracted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.them.us\/entertainment\/tv-and-movies\/vera-drew-found-footage-comedy\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">interest from distributors<\/a>. Other programs like the Trans Film Mentorship and the Sundance Institute\u2019s Trans Possibilities Intensive also provide funding for trans filmmakers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn addition to performing in films like \u201cCastration Movie\u201d and \u201cCamp Miasma,\u201d Fast is a filmmaker in their own right, making their debut with \u201cHoneycomb\u201d back in 2022 for just $5,000 with a group of friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTheir most recent film, \u201cCamp,\u201d follows a troubled young woman who works as a camp counselor to escape the memory of tragic events in her life. We all know how bad it is, so why are we fighting to be a part of it?\u201d Fast says. \u201cFor me, I\u2019m able to sustain myself through service work, I\u2019m comfortable doing that, I don\u2019t mind it. If I can continue making films for micro budgets with my friends, these are the things that I find inspiring and that I get real joy out of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEven with \u201cCamp,\u201d Fast admits they had a \u201creally hard time\u201d maintaining their voice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m so opposed to sacrificing any of my vision for something to be better understood or for our distributors to be happy or for the producers to feel involved in the process or whatever,\u201d Fast says. \u201cI got \u2018Camp\u2019 through to the other side without the vision being too mangled, but fuck, it was such a fight. And I don\u2019t want to fight my whole life when I don\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMackay, who at the age of 22 has already directed seven features, recently screened \u201cOur Effed Up World\u201d at Fantastia, which was produced by Schoenbrun. To date, she has heavily relied on crowdfunding to bring her projects to life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI feel very grateful to have been able to make the films I have made, but it\u2019s been at such a micro scale. I don\u2019t necessarily want to do the next Marvel movie and have a trillion dollars, but I want to make something in the few million-dollar range,\u201d Mackay says. \u201cThat\u2019s the dream to keep growing and moving out of the micro-budget space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMany of Mackay\u2019s films are streaming on Shudder, which has helped her body of work connect with horror fans around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI mean, they literally picked up my first film that I made with no money when I was 16, and that was not something that I ever dreamed of,\u201d Mackay says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs if making movies wasn\u2019t already hard enough, trans storytellers working in independent spaces are now grappling with the realities of a shifting industry in which studios are consolidating, leading many in Hollywood to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/hollywood-open-letter-paramount-warner-bros-deal-1236720249\/\">sign open letters<\/a> speaking out against the looming Paramount-Warner Bros. merger. The merger has also ignited fears about a rightward shift.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut the reality is that many trans and nonbinary filmmakers have already had to carve out a space for themselves separate from the studio system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis literal monopoly that\u2019s existed, to me, adds value to independent filmmakers. I think independent film is stronger than ever,\u201d Drew says. \u201cThe capitalist hellscape that we\u2019re in makes me feel more empowered as an independent filmmaker because my perspective has value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAlex Schmider, GLAAD\u2019s senior director of entertainment and a producer behind \u201cDisclosure\u201d and \u201cChanging the Game,\u201d says he is \u201cinspired\u201d by contemporary trans artists: \u201cThey are undeterred by lack of funding, institutional support, and traditional distribution. In fact, they\u2019re more creative and collaborative in their approach and strategies than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDrew says: \u201cThe benefit of mostly existing in these indie spaces is that we get to tell our own story and get to control the narrative a little bit. I make the movies that only I could make. Louise makes the movies that only she could, and Alice is the same way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThere was a wave not too long ago when Hollywood tried to tell stories about trans people, usually helmed by cisgender directors. Several won Oscars, including \u201cThe Danish Girl\u201d starring Eddie Redmayne and \u201cBoys Don\u2019t Cry\u201d starring Hilary Swank. But in today\u2019s media landscape, no directors working with major studios are interested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhen I\u2019ve pitched ideas in mainstream spaces and there is a trans lead, the feedback I\u2019ve gotten sometimes is, \u2018This is too niche.\u2019 Which is frustrating, I guess, but it\u2019s only frustrating because it appeared differently when the trans tipping point was happening with \u2018Transparent\u2019 on TV.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA recent example of a cisgender director prominently centering their film around a trans character was Jacques Audiard\u2019s musical \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez.\u201d Despite earning 13 Oscar nominations, that film faced significant pushback from the LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHaven says, \u201cIt\u2019s a film from the voyeuristic perspective, and so it makes transness into something that is fascinating, titillating, perverse. But it doesn\u2019t hit at the core of what I understand transness to be, which is in direct opposition to the message that things cannot change. Because transness is imagination, and imagination is liberation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMashiahof adds that when cisgender directors tell trans stories, they happen to align with the \u201cstrange imagination\u201d that a man is pretending to be a woman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhereas you have a film like \u2018I Saw the TV Glow\u2019 where transness is just this feeling that is the world, versus it being located on a person doing a thing that looks weird to society,\u201d Mashiahof says. \u201cWhen trans filmmakers are given the opportunity to tell a story, it actually warps that and shifts the onus of that weirdness onto society versus the person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBorn out of filmmaker and programmer Elizabeth Purchell\u2019s \u201cmoment of crisis,\u201d Muscle Distribution was founded in 2025 as the only trans-owned distribution label. In the past year, Muscle has become the go-to stop for micro-budget films from trans filmmakers like \u201cCastration Movie,\u201d as well as two of Fast\u2019s films, \u201cHoneycomb\u201d and the upcoming release \u201cDrinking and Driving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe ultimate gimmick is seeing a trans movie in a theater because they\u2019re not really being made, programmers aren\u2019t showing them and no one wants to get behind them in a meaningful way,\u201d Purchell says. \u201c[But] now we\u2019re in this moment where there is this opening for people to find stuff online, for DIY groups to put together screenings, for theaters and festivals to start taking notice. Something really is happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSome filmmakers in this space have also taken the approach of making their films widely available  online with a \u201cpay what you wish\u201d model, which Weard has done with all three \u201cCastration\u201d films. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt was definitely a project that was always designed for online first. That was not an experience I was seeing at all at film festivals a few years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLooking around at the community they\u2019ve found and the work their friends are putting out against the odds, Haven says that \u201cwe\u2019re creating a new industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI think there\u2019s a lot of power in it because it can\u2019t be co-opted and it can\u2019t be bought,\u201d they conclude. \u201cWe went through a really confusing era where big industry was trying to take transness and sell it to us, but it actually just doesn\u2019t sell because transness threatens a lot of the structures that we know.
