As the <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/tech\/ramageddon-every-tech-price-increase-2026\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">memory chip shortage<\/a> rages on, a new report from the Taiwanese newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/money.udn.com\/money\/story\/5612\/9680882\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>United Daily News<\/u><\/a> (UDN) says PCs are facing further price hikes as Microsoft raises its Windows 11 licensing fees for device manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>According to a PC brand executive who spoke anonymously to UDN, Microsoft normally bumps its Windows license fees for PC makers by small margins every year. That would make sense since most Windows laptops and desktops sold to consumers come with their operating systems pre-installed. (In a win for DIYers, pricing for individual Windows 11 licenses remains unchanged.)<\/p>\n<p>When reached for comment by Mashable, a representative for Microsoft said the company &#8220;has nothing to share at this time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If true, UDN&#8217;s report means PC makers are facing unprecedented financial challenges on the software <em>and<\/em> hardware fronts. The AI boom has caused a shortage of physical computer components like RAM and SSD storage chips, forcing brands like <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/tech\/dell-xps-14-laptop-price-increase-ram-shortage\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">Dell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/framework-price-hike-ddr5-ram-memory-shortage\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">Framework<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/microsoft-surface-laptop-price-increase-memory-shortage\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">Microsoft<\/a> itself to jack up their laptop prices in recent months.
