People can get infected if they have an open wound that comes in contact with contaminated water or by eating undercooked shellfish, most likely oysters, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/08\/us\/louisiana-vibrio-vulnificus-outbreak-flesh-eating-bacteria.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/08\/us\/louisiana-vibrio-vulnificus-outbreak-flesh-eating-bacteria.html\">Times<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">People with underlying health concerns, such as liver disease, HIV, diabetes and cancer, could be at greater risk. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">\u201cIf you have those risk factors, and if you have an open wound or abrasion in your skin, you do not want to go swimming in brackish waters along the Gulf Coast and the Atlantic Seaboard,\u201d Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/flesh-eating-bacteria-kill-gulf-coast-how-to-protect-yourself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/flesh-eating-bacteria-kill-gulf-coast-how-to-protect-yourself\/\">CBS News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">Vibrio vulnificus is known as a flesh-eating disease because it causes necrotizing fasciitis, which causes the skin around a wound to die, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfla.com\/news\/florida\/florida-reports-another-death-from-flesh-eating-bacteria-vibrio-vulnificus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wfla.com\/news\/florida\/florida-reports-another-death-from-flesh-eating-bacteria-vibrio-vulnificus\/\">WFLA<\/a> explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">Other symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
