The 90-year-old icon turned down the offer to reprise her role of Queen Clarisse in the movie, which will serve as a long-awaited sequel to 2001\u2019s \u201cThe Princess Diaries\u201d and 2004\u2019s \u201cPrincess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI think I probably passed\u2026 I think I\u2019m retired, really, would be about the best description for that,\u201d Andrews said about her decision not to return. \u201c[The film\u2019s creative team] asked me all last year if I would be keen to do it. It was very very hard to say \u2018no,\u2019 but I did because I thought I had a wonderful ride, and this one I felt would flourish very well and wouldn\u2019t need Granny going in there at my age.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAndrews has not acted on screen in years, although she has taken various voice roles over the last decade in movies such as \u201cMinions: The Rise of Gru,\u201d \u201cThe King\u2019s Daughter\u201d and \u201cAquaman,\u201d plus television series like \u201cBridgerton.\u201d She told InStyle that she enjoys narrating the blockbuster Netflix series as Lady Whistledown since she can record her lines from home. Andrews added: \u201cI do it mostly to keep my brain alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<em>Variety<\/em> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YII55XIzaoI&amp;feature=emb_title\">confirmed in November 2022<\/a> that Disney was developing a third installment in \u201cThe Princess Diaries\u201d franchise with screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji (\u201cReacher,\u201d \u201cSupergirl\u201d).\u00a0Andrews told <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YII55XIzaoI&amp;feature=emb_title\">Access Hollywood<\/a> a month later that she doubted she\u2019d be back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI think we know that it\u2019s probably not going to be possible,\u201d she said at the time. \u201cIt was talked about very shortly after [\u201cPrincess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement\u201d] came out, but it\u2019s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, our queen, is so much older. And I am not sure whether it would float or run.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBefore the third installment was officially put in development at Disney, Hathaway<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/anne-hathaway-says-shes-pulling-for-princess-diaries-3-exclusive-193058\"> told Entertainment Tonight<\/a> that she would be keen to bring Andrews back. She added: \u201cWe would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut Andrews is not returning after all. Adele Lim (\u201cCrazy Rich Asians,\u201d \u201cRaya and the Last Dragon\u201d) <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/news\/princess-diaries-3-adele-lim-to-direct-1236168384\/\">signed on to direct<\/a> \u201cThe Princess Diaries 3\u201d in 2024. Hathaway will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis, now Queen of Genovia, in the threequel. She said during an interview on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/Da-bD1ejS1K\/\">SiriusXM\u2019s \u201cRadio Andy\u201d<\/a> earlier this year the script for the new movie recently went through a breakthrough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI think we are moving in the right direction,\u201d she said at the time. \u201cThe script that we were working on \u2014 we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLim <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/princess-diaries-3-director-returns-crazy-rich-asians-sequel-1236744092\/\">told <em>Variety<\/em><\/a> in May that the shooting and production schedule were still being worked out for \u201cThe Princess Diaries 3.\u2019 A release date has yet to be announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe original \u201cPrincess Diaries,\u201d based on the novel by Meg Cabot, was released in 2001 and was directed by the late Garry Marshall. Hathaway stars as an awkward American teenager who learns she\u2019s the heir to the throne of the European kingdom of Genovia. Despite mixed reviews, the family film became a box office hit with $165 million in global ticket sales. The first sequel opened in 2004 and introduced the world to Chris Pine.
