{"id":39575,"date":"2026-08-11T23:51:51","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T18:51:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=39575"},"modified":"2026-08-11T23:51:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T18:51:51","slug":"wnba-faces-major-pr-test-amid-heated-debates-over-identity-and-inclusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=39575","title":{"rendered":"WNBA faces major PR test amid heated debates over identity and inclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/6a3c76079627e4.48280120-e1784742943730.jpeg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\n        <iframe id=\"instaread_iframe\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Audio Article\" style=\"display:block\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n    <\/p>\n<p><\/instaread-player><\/p>\n<p>The WNBA is finding itself at the center of escalating culture wars over issues relating to gender, race and equity as the league\u2019s popularity grows and more players become outspoken on politics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Much of the debate, on social media and sports or news talk shows in recent days, revolves around transgender athletes in women\u2019s sports, a topic Sophie Cunningham, a player for the Indiana Fever and teammate of superstar Caitlan Clark, weighed in on last month.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Cunningham told ESPN it was a priority for her to advocate for\u00a0\u201cyoung girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn\u2019t have to go against biological men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Cunningham is not one of the league\u2019s most prolific stars, her political commentary has gained her more national notoriety than many of her peers.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, Cunningham was hit with a flagrant foul by Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington, who was ejected from the game and later posted on social media to suggest race was a factor in her being assessed the foul.<\/p>\n<p>The WNBA is separately facing scrutiny over its eligibility rules as conservative pundits and Republican public officials needle the league over its longstanding social justice initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>It all is feeding into a pressure cooker engulfing a league that has soared in popularity in recent seasons, thanks in part to more expansive media rights deals and a growing number of elite players.<\/p>\n<p>It is against this backdrop, sports and business observers say, that the WNBA is facing one of its biggest public relations tests since its founding three decades ago. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s coming at them rapid fire. It seems they\u2019re at the intersection of every identify conversation in sports and their visibility has never been more significant,\u201d said Nicole Kraft, a professor of sports journalism at Ohio State University. \u201cThe more people you attract who are outside of the traditional WNBA audience, every controversy has the potential to become a national cultural debate, and they need to be prepared for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A number of prominent right-wing media figures and GOP elected officials have praised Cunningham for her comments on transgender athletes in women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n<p>Some have attacked Carrington for posting \u201cwhite privilege\u201d on social media after she was ejected for the hard foul on Cunningham.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Meanwhile, the debate on WNBA eligibility was further enflamed last week when Enes Kanter Freedom, who played more than a decade in the NBA, announced he was declaring for the WNBA draft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf simply declaring who you are is all that\u2019s required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA,\u201d Kanter Freedom wrote on social media.<\/p>\n<p>The WNBA, in a subsequent statement shared with multiple media outlets last week, said it \u201cwill not be used as political pawns,\u201d and pushed back on \u201chate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group of people, including transgender people,\u201d which it said \u201conly fuel fear, division, and harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Some critics have said the WNBA is not doing enough to push back on conservatives or those like Kanter who, they say, are attacking the league to score political points or get attention. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter 30 years of fighting for respect and legitimacy, the league is finally on the cusp of its breakthrough. Yet the lack of professionalism at the highest level has trickled down,\u201d said sports media pundit and former NFL player Ryan Clark.<\/p>\n<p>He then took a shot at Cunningham, who is averaging 8.9 points per game.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cNow, divisive gossip from a 9-point scorer gets more attention than the league\u2019s best teams and players. It\u2019s time for the media to redirect the conversation\u2014and stop rewarding clowns who turn serious issues into spectacles for attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prominent sports commentator and basketball enthusiast Bill Simmons called the WNBA \u201clegitimately fun to watch\u201d on a recent episode of his Ringer podcast and bemoaned the fact that \u201call anyone wants to talk about is dumb s\u2014.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who participates in the s\u2014\u2013 discourse about the league, I think that speaks more about them \u2026 but what the league really needs is a commissioner,\u201d he said, calling out WNBA top executive Cathy Engelbert. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen a league more determined to not push its fun stars. Instead, it\u2019s all this discourse stuff and they\u2019re just stepping in bear traps left and right because they have no adults in charge of the league.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The WNBA did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Some say the league could ultimately benefit from the political discourse, which does bring attention to the WNBA. The league has two key ingredients for success in the live sports marketplace, these people say: Elite stars and growing cultural relevance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll leagues in 2026 are creating in the attention economy and star power is more important than ever,\u201d said Ben Sheilds, a sports business and marketing expert at MIT. \u201cThe WNBA is very carefully trying to balance its business considerations with some of the expectations we have on it as an institution in our society and that has to be feeding some of the decision making here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media Inc.
