Soon, Spotify may also tell you the person they describe doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in mid-September, the streaming platform will place an &#8220;AI Persona&#8221; badge on profiles built around <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/category\/artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">AI-generated<\/a> identities. Music from those profiles will also be excluded from Spotify\u2019s editorial playlists and algorithmic recommendations by default, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2026-08-11\/ai-persona-badges-transparency\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">announced<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2026-08-11\/ai-persona-badges-transparency\/https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2026-08-11\/ai-persona-badges-transparency\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"> Aug. 11.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Spotify will stop introducing listeners to AI Personas by default. Their songs should no longer pop up in Discover Weekly, Release Radar, or another <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/spotify-prompted-playlist-how-to\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">personalized playlist<\/a> unless you have already shown interest in the artist. You can still search for, play, and follow them, and following one may tell Spotify that you\u2019re open to hearing more. Still, 80 percent wanted AI music clearly labeled, and 72 percent wanted to know if a streaming service was recommending it.<\/p>\n<h2>How Spotify&#8217;s AI Persona badge works<\/h2>\n<p>As of Aug. 11, artists can disclose through Spotify for Artists that their profiles represent AI Personas. The company will also review profiles that appear to represent photorealistic AI-generated people. If Spotify reaches that conclusion, it will apply a separate \u201cLikely AI Persona\u201d badge. Tapping one will show whether the artist self-disclosed or Spotify applied the label after a review. Artists can appeal Spotify\u2019s decision, and listeners will eventually be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.spotify.com\/us\/artists\/article\/ai-personas\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">report suspected AI Personas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<section x-data=\"window.newsletter({ isDeal: false })\" x-init=\"init()\" aria-label=\"Newsletter Sign-Up\" class=\"relative invisible my-12 mx-auto w-full max-w-3xl md:my-16 ziff-component accent-cut-for-gradient-bg accent-cut-border-for-gradient-bg bg-gradient-fuchsia-secondary p-[2px]\">\n<p>\n            <span class=\"text-gradient-fuchsia-secondary\">Mashable Light Speed<\/span>\n        <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>The policy does not cover every fictional or virtual musician. It specifically targets photorealistic AI identities that could reasonably be mistaken for real people.<\/p>\n<p>One important caveat: The badge identifies the artist, not how the music was made. Spotify handles that separately through <a href=\"https:\/\/support.spotify.com\/us\/artists\/article\/ai-credits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">AI Credits<\/a>, which identify specific parts of a track that were generated with AI. An artist could disclose AI-generated lyrics, vocals, instrumental performances, or production without labeling the entire song as AI-made.<\/p>\n<h2>AI music has been flooding streaming platforms<\/h2>\n<p>The need for clearer labels became harder to ignore as AI-generated musicians began attracting real audiences.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/2GRtyAXWUiisGYub5SGMrb\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">The Velvet Sundown,<\/a> for example, initially presented itself as a four-person rock band and drew more than 1 million monthly listeners before acknowledging in July 2025 that it was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DLuduo5qbr7\/\" target=\"_new\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">&#8220;synthetic music project<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The same confusion has reached Spotify\u2019s recommendation tools. In January, Mashable&#8217;s Features Editor Rachel Thompson reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/spotify-smart-shuffle-ai-music\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">Smart Shuffle placed an AI-generated <\/a>funk song in her queue, even though she had not been looking for AI music. The track fit naturally alongside songs from the 1970s and \u201980s, and she only learned how it was made after investigating the artist.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the number of AI songs entering streaming services continues to climb. Deezer said it received about 90,000 fully AI-generated tracks per day in June 2026, accounting for <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom-deezer.com\/2026\/07\/ai-music-exceeds-50-percent-daily-uploads-deezer\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">more than half of new uploads<\/a> on peak days. Those tracks still represented only 1 to 3 percent of listening after Deezer removed them from recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>Other streaming services are trying to make AI use more apparent, too. Apple Music added <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/apple-transparency-tags-ai-generated-content\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">Transparency Tags<\/a> back in March, allowing labels and distributors to disclose whether AI was used in a track, composition, music video, or artwork.<\/p>\n<p>The AI Persona badge is also only one part of Spotify\u2019s larger effort to sort out who listeners are and what they are hearing. <a href=\"https:\/\/artists.spotify.com\/blog\/introducing-artist-profile-protection\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">Artist Profile Protection<\/a>, which entered limited beta in March, is an optional feature that lets artists review eligible releases before they appear under their names. Artists can approve or decline each release, and anything they reject or fail to review will not appear on their profiles or contribute to their statistics and recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>Spotify has also introduced a green <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/spotify-ai-human-artist-verification\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">&#8220;Verified by Spotify&#8221; badge<\/a> for profiles it has reviewed and determined represent real artists. The company looks for sustained listener engagement, compliance with its policies, and evidence of an identifiable artist outside Spotify; for example, live concerts, merchandise, or linked social accounts. Profiles primarily representing AI-generated artists are not eligible. The company says hundreds of thousands of artists have now been verified, accounting for <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2026-04-30\/verified-by-spotify-badge-artist-details\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">more than 99 percent of the artists listeners actively search for<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, Spotify\u2019s new features are trying to answer a question listeners rarely, if ever, had to ask before: Is the artist behind this song an <em>actual<\/em> person?
