The new version debuted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/chart-beat\/michelle-branch-new-radicals-game-of-love-chart-debut-1236307406\/\"><em>Billboard<\/em>\u2018s Adult Pop Airplay chart<\/a> at No. 33 for the Aug. 8-dated chart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThey also created a new music video for the song \u2014 premiering below \u2014\u00a0marking the first clip that New Radicals have appeared in in 28 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe video is also the latest in a relative flurry of activity for New Radicals and Alexander in the last few years, which has led to Alexander and New Radicals partner Danielle Brisebois reforming and working on new music together. That included releasing the first New Radicals song in decades, \u201cOne Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!),\u201d featured in the new rom-com <em>One Night Only<\/em>, which opened Aug. 7.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cNo matter how I try, I just can\u2019t escape New Radicals,\u201d Alexander tells <em>Billboard<\/em>, citing Shazam statistics of how the group\u2019s 1998 pop classic \u201cYou Get What You Give\u201d remains heavily searched by users of the song-identifying tool around the world nearly 30 years later. New generations continue to discover it through creative usages, such as a re-recorded version by New Zealand\u2019s Benee used by MTV to promote its 2025 Video Music Awards, or a Geese cover of the tune during an appearance on BBC Radio in November. \u201cSo, if I can\u2019t escape my pop past, perhaps [I] just embrace it!\u201d he says. But more about that later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe effervescent video for \u201cThe Game of Love\u201d follows a man touting a boombox gathering followers through a neighborhood and is based on a real incident experienced by Alexander.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis video\u2019s concept actually happened,\u201d he says. \u201cI recently was in [New York\u2019s] Washington Square Park one night a bit stoned and this swift-moving boombox from the other side of the park was blasting [Stardust\u2019s 1998 dance hit] \u2018Music Sounds Better with You,\u2019 but the music was not staying in one spot,\u201d he says. \u201cSo, I started running towards the bass sounds. It was coming from this huge dude the size of a Sumo wrestler, with a giant boombox strapped onto his body with everyone staring.\u00a0And when his boombox segued to Daft Punk\u2019s \u201cOne More Time,\u201d me and a bunch of park [goers] started following this guy like the Pied Piper, with everyone singing along. People couldn\u2019t believe it! That was the whole concept which we later recreated on the streets of Nashville.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New Radicals, Michelle Branch - The Game of Love (Official Music Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_smN726eeJ4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWith the new \u201cThe Game of Love\u201d video, directed by Running Bear Films\u2019 Stephen Kinigopoulos and Alexa Stone, Alexander also gets to right a wrong that has haunted him from the original \u201cYou Get What You Give\u201d music clip, which took place in a mall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMy \u2018You Get What You Give\u2019 video was beyond fun, but I always wanted it to be more multicultural,\u201d he says. \u201cYet in the \u201890s you\u2019d ask for a diverse cast of extras, but then show up on set and it\u2019d look kind of like a Gap commercial. The whole idea with this video was to have every age and size and color of people, which thankfully came to be. We even have rockin\u2019 grandmas!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOne holdover from the original \u201cYou Get What You Give\u201d video in the new clip? Alexander\u2019s now-legendary bucket hat that he not only sports in the video, but also on the cover of the New Radicals\u2019 1998 studio album, <em>Maybe You\u2019ve Been Brainwashed Too.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a small miracle it hasn\u2019t been eaten by moths by now,\u201d he says of the famous hat. \u201cI had it in a storage space, locked up with my boxes of photos and songwriting reels and voicemail tapes dating back to the early 1990s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tReuniting with Branch for the re-imagined \u201cThe Game of Love\u201d as a duet was a joy, Alexander says. \u201cIt was a blast recording with Michelle because it felt like an old school New York session: Real musicians and tube mics\u2026 I adore Michelle, so when you\u2019re with someone you\u2019re protective of \u2014 we met when she was just 19 \u2014 it makes singing more of a soul connection than anything else!\u00a0 We have a lot in common.\u00a0 We\u2019re both teenage rock &amp; roll runaways. Except my one-way L.A. ticket was from Detroit, age 16, and her was from Sedona, Arizona, age 17.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSimilarly, working again with Alexander \u201cfelt incredibly special,\u201d Branch says in a statement. \u201cGregg and I have known each other for so many years, and there\u2019s such a history between us through \u2018The Game of Love.\u2019 To come back together now, all these years later, and actually be in front of the camera together for this song felt a little surreal \u2014 and also completely natural. I hope you can really feel the joy we had making it. It feels like a full-circle moment, and I\u2019m so excited for people to see us together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe song is the first release from Branch\u2019s <em>Everywhere and Back Again<\/em>\u00a0EP, arriving\u00a0Nov. 6 via BMG \u2014 which reimagines a number of Branch\u2019s past hits, including \u201cEverywhere\u201d and \u201cAll I Wanted.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe video concludes with an end-title card that reads, \u201cIn Loving Memory of Clive Davis,\u201d the legendary label executive who died June 22. \u201cThe Game of Love\u201d originally came out on Davis\u2019s Arista imprint, and followed Santana\u2019s comeback album and worldwide sensation, 1999\u2019s <em>Supernatural.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter Alexander and Rick Nowels wrote \u201cThe Game of Love,\u201d Davis first wanted the recently disbanded New Radicals on it with Santana. \u201cBut I was having too much fun to weigh down my new life with rock dream tedium, so I moved to Europe,\u201d Alexander remembers. Then, Davis famously had Tina Turner record the song with Santana \u2014 but she declined to make a video, so Davis turned to Macy Gray. He ultimately landed on Branch, who not only sang on the track, but played rhythm guitar. Alexander and Branch originally planned to surprise Davis with the new version.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI was flying back June 22 from Prague to New York to master the record planning to present it to Clive, until Michelle literally messaged me on the plane the heartbreaking news Clive passed,\u201d Alexander says. \u201cThe original, and now this new version, are equally two of my favorite productions I\u2019ve done in my little life \u2014 and so Michelle and I planned to surprise Clive with it. We\u2019re confident it would have brought him great joy us singing together.\u00a0\u2018The Game of Love\u2019 was Clive\u2019s fave song of mine!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWorking with Branch again is not the only recent reunion for Alexander. As Alexander <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/music\/news\/new-radicals-gregg-alexander-one-night-only-new-album-1236829633\/\" target=\"_blank\">first told <em>Variety<\/em><\/a>, New Radicals \u2014 Alexander and Brisebois \u2014 are working on a potential sophomore album, cheekily titled, <em>\u201cMaybe You\u2019ve Been Brainwashed TWO (THE Heathen Will \u2018CON$pirituality\u2019 TROLL).<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe new New Radicals album is a lot like our first album,\u201d he says. \u201cA wild array of random demo-quality masters, and indeed zany pop monsterpieces (sic) like \u2018You Get What You Give.\u2019\u201d The last released song written together by the duo until \u201cOne Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!)\u201d was the Oscar-nominated \u201cLost Stars,\u201d penned for the 2014 film \u201cBegin Again\u201d and performed by Maroon 5\u2019s Adam Levine. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWriting \u201cOne Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!)\u201d occurred after both Alexander and Brisebois had the serendipitous good fortune to have two of their past separate hits coincidentally experience massive resurgences over the past few years. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMurder on the Dance Floor,\u201d written by Alexander and Sophie Ellis-Bextor \u2014 who released the song in 2001 \u2014 found a totally new life following the tune\u2019s integral usage for a climactic scene in the 2023 movie <em>Saltburn<\/em>. Concurrently, Brisebois saw a similar surge with \u201cUnwritten,\u201d Natasha Bedingfield\u2019s 2004 smash, co-written by the two women and Wayne Rodrigues, after its synch usage in the Glen Powell\/Sydney Sweeney 2023 rom-com <em>Anyone But You<\/em>. Both songs went viral and found a new generation of fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter the two songs\u2019 renaissance, Alexander and Brisebois, who had remained close, came together to pen the new song. \u201cThe writing of \u2018One Night Only\u2019 was more than anything just about trying to capture some of the essence of that film\u2019s plot, bonkers as it was,\u201d Alexander says. \u201cWe wrote lyrics and got on the mic for fun and sent [it] over on a lark, and Universal dug it so much they immediately put it in the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe activity led to the New Radicals\u2019 reactivation. \u201c\u2018One Night Only\u2019 being a soft launch song from a film and \u2018The Game of Love\u2019 being a duet just seemed like a fun, low-stakes way of warming up the plate for any proper follow up to \u2018You Get What You Give,\u2019\u201d Alexander says. \u201c[Putting] these two songs out in the last few weeks [is] sort of a fun rock &amp; roll science experiment of just releasing some music to slowly spread the word.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"One Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w_f3kpQCmuc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe first New Radicals\u2019 album came out on Universal Music Group\u2019s MCA Records, which now serves as UMG\u2019s Nashville imprint. The new album will come out through a UMG imprint since it still had the rights to the band\u2019s music. The album also reunites Alexander with UMG chair\/CEO <strong>Lucian Grainge<\/strong>, who supported Alexander since his New Radical days and through writing multiple hits for Ronan Keating and other artists. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cLucian changed my destiny in so many positive ways, much to the same extent Clive Davis did,\u201d Alexander says. \u201cSo, although Lucian\u2019s in rarified air nowadays, he always champions my quirky personality and music remaining a priority somehow behind the scenes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAlexander suspects the album will come out on Capitol or Interscope, but Interscope vice chairman <strong>Steve Berman<\/strong> is one of the few to have already heard some of the new music. Following the UMG\u2019s Grammy party earlier this year, Berman invited Alexander to his office \u201cand we spent 90 minutes jamming some of New Radicals unheard double-album,\u201d Alexander says. \u201cHe reminded me Interscope is still the best label on earth, and that \u2018You Get What You Give\u2019 is one of UMG\u2019s crown jewels of the whole \u201990s \u2014 apparently second only to Nirvana\u2019s \u2018Smells Like Teen Spirit\u2019 in syncs, radio, playlists and such.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSpeaking of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/nirvana\/\">Nirvana<\/a>, Alexander and Nowels\u00a0\u2014 whom Alexander has known since he was 16 and whom he wrote \u201cYou Give What You Get\u201d with \u2014 have already reunited to write a song that namechecks the late Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain. \u201cWe wrote one of our best songs. It\u2019s early stages. [It\u2019s] about how Cobain would be 60 soon, and what would he say of these Musks and Trumps running our world,\u201d Alexander says, quoting some of the lyrics: \u201c\u2019Live in a cabana then in a Ramada\/ Lookin\u2019 like Madonna lookin\u2019 for Nirvana\/ Aren\u2019t we all in the same boat? Even Kurt\u2019s stuck\u2026still lookin\u2019 for Nirvana!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s bizarre how musically and almost spiritually connected Rick and I still are,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen I walked into Clive Davis packed funeral recently, Rick was naturally the first person I saw.\u00a0 And we sat together smiling warmly, reflecting on Clive until Jennifer Hudson came on mic and started singing \u2018I Will Always Love You\u2019 a cappella. And it sounded so poignantly heartbreaking we just involuntarily started sobbing and hugging.\u00a0Wholly unexpected.
