{"id":39131,"date":"2026-08-11T19:06:03","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T14:06:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=39131"},"modified":"2026-08-11T19:06:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T14:06:03","slug":"islanders-fan-designed-jersey-contest-whittled-down-to-eight-finalists-after-80000-plus-entries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=39131","title":{"rendered":"Islanders&#8217; fan-designed jersey contest whittled down to eight finalists after 80,000-plus entries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F2%2F2026%2F08%2Fnewspress-collage-iv1fzb5w6-1786453612648.jpg?quality%3D90%26strip%3Dall%261786439266\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>It\u2019s sweater weather in an August heatwave.<\/p>\n<p>The Islanders whittled down the number of public-designed submissions for the team\u2019s 2027 season alternate jerseys from 80,490 to eight \u2013 and a \u201cMarch Madness-style fan vote\u201d is on the way for what\u2019s become a passion project for the players and staff alike.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had (Matthew) Schaefer, (Bo) Horvat, (Kyle) Palmieri, (Ondrej) Palat, (Jean-Gabriel) Pageau, (ryan) Pulock, (Mathew) Barzal, (Alexander) Romanov all actively involved in this process,\u201d Isles president of business operations Kelly Cheeseman told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany other alumni reached out\u2026[Bryan Trottier] and Matt Martin and some of those guys were actively involved in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Two of the finalists. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Islanders<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The final eight designs include two of four logo styles: a lighthouse, a fisherman and the words \u201cIsles\u201d or spelled out \u201cIslanders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is in addition to the \u201cNY\u201d hockey stick without the traditional backdrop of Long Island, which was featured on the team\u2019s previous alternatives that were retired in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>One fisherman jersey is navy, similar to the Islanders 2022 reverse retro style, but includes teal trim instead of white. Its alternative is orange with a lighter shade of blue.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Another pair of finalist jerseys. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Islanders<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The lighthouse designs follow suit, but its navy iteration has a noticeably electric teal drop shadow around the numbering.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cNY\u201d options are either a navy with a white logo and trim or an orange jersey and blue \u201cNY\u201d logo.<\/p>\n<p>Both designs for the \u201cIsles\u201d and \u201cIslanders\u201d are navy, orange and cream white.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The fifth and sixth options for the jersey. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Islanders<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The same two types of jersey crests, like fisherman vs. fisherman, will be pitted against each other in a quarterfinal vote from Aug. 12-14.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Final four ballot boxes open from\u00a0 Aug. 15-17, and then Aug. 18-20 for the remaining two.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had in my mind that 3,000 to 5,000 [entries] would be a home run, and 1,500 would be a success,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI definitely did not see this coming, and it\u2019s just exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cheeseman added that the lighthouse logo, which was only worn as a shoulder patch on the team\u2019s \u201cwave\u201d style jerseys of the late 1990s, led the way with 26% of fans submitting it as the main crest.<\/p>\n<p>Navy and orange-colored jerseys, like that of the team\u2019s early to mid-2000s look, came in at 19%, while traditional Isles blue comprised 21% of entries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would love to see an orange,\u201d Cheeseman confessed of a hopeful winner. \u201cI think that\u2019s a great brand addition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also said that predominantly white or cream-colored jerseys, while popular with fans, posed a logistical challenge for away teams on road trips that could cut into their ice time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t wear those at home as much,\u201d Cheeseman said, \u201cbecause you\u2019ve got to get the other team to come in with their darks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organization also gave fans incredible free rein to concoct a tarp that didn\u2019t have to conform to the team\u2019s traditional color sets. Other teams like the Devils and Jets teased the Islanders on social media by making jerseys in their own palettes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The final two entries. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Islanders<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A healthy scratch was immediately given to nearly 30,000 \u201cthat were different colors and irregular, off-brand\u201d \u2013 like a franken-jersey of purple, green and yellow that The Post designed to test the competition\u2019s limits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, that left about 50,000 seriously considered submissions that fans worked up in the near two-and-a-half-week window. Plenty of folks bypassed the design website the Islanders created as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI received many FedExes and passionate emails from people that did their own designs and AI designs or their own creative designs,\u201d Cheeseman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, we couldn\u2019t use those.
