Some questions this joke begs are: &#8220;Why does this goldfish bowl have an electrical outlet?&#8221; &#8220;Is this the first time Bob ever tried to use the outlet?&#8221; &#8220;Why does the other fish know water and electricity are a dangerous mix, but Bob doesn&#8217;t?&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The absence of explanation is what makes this <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/far-side-comics-funniest-dialogue\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Far Side <\/em>comic laugh-out-loud funny<\/a>. Bob the goldfish is about to do something extremely dumb and dangerous, while the unnamed second fish stands in for the audience, shouting &#8220;<em>You fool!<\/em>&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><em>The Far Side <\/em>didn&#8217;t always give its characters a last-second chance to save themselves, like here, but the last, darkest question this cartoon leaves readers pondering is: &#8220;Does Bob listen? It&#8217;s not exactly a &#8220;fish out of water&#8221; joke, because the fish is technically in water, bath water, but it is definitely a fish out of context. <\/p>\n<p>Like so many of its fellow <em>Far Side <\/em>animals, this fish is semi-anthropomorphized. It is still a fish, physically, from what readers can tell. (To be fair, only its head and tail are sticking up out of the bubble bath&#8217;s waters; it&#8217;s possible this is, in fact, a horrifying fish-man with human arms.) In this <em>Far Side <\/em>cartoon, Gary Larson checks in on a couple of them, settling into their human-style living room for the evening and talking about what they have done the past few days: get suckered.<\/p>\n<p>And even funnier, this <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/funniest-far-side-comics-bad-marriages-gary-larson\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Far Side <\/em>married couple<\/a> are mad at each other for getting suckered, even though it is clearly in their nature. The sucker fish wife henpecks her husband for massively overpaying for a toaster, while he irately reminds her that just yesterday she bought a &#8220;<em>&#8216;magic&#8217; pen and pencil set<\/em>.&#8221; For $10,000.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, this cartoon is devoid of <em>The Far Side&#8217;s <\/em>usual penchant for mystery. It&#8217;s weird, but not confusing. Downside: they&#8217;re now out of the water and about to be &#8220;<em>equally screwed<\/em>,&#8221; unless someone comes along with another bowl quick.<\/p>\n<p>This <em>Far Side <\/em>comic has two things going on at once that are equally funny, but in different ways: the absurd action of the fishbowl on fire, and the hilarious underselling of their predicament by the fish father, who is far too calm under the pressure of this situation. He doesn&#8217;t sugarcoat it for his wife and kid. This isn&#8217;t looking good for them. <\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/far-side-anthropomorphized-fish-gary-larson-list\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Far Side <\/em>fish cartoon<\/a> also stands out because of the interesting artistic choice Gary Larson makes, the painterly flourish of yellow and purple in the background. It is likely he did this so that the action isn&#8217;t happening against a completely vanilla white backdrop, but notable that he didn&#8217;t fully render the room the fish are in, like in other panels. Which equates to a singular <em>Far Side <\/em>cartoon that will stick in fans&#8217; minds. <\/p>\n<h3 id=\"final-thoughts\">\n            Final Thoughts:<br \/>\n    <\/h3>\n<p>Fish, and in particular, the household goldfish, never quite became <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/greatest-far-side-cow-comics\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Far Side <\/em>icons on the level of cows<\/a>, chickens, cats and dogs, or even bears. Yet they were still staples of Gary Larson&#8217;s humor. The goldfish proved to be one of Larson&#8217;s most reliable go-to recurring characters, the fish bowl one of his most effective settings.<\/p>\n<p>Part of that was a product of necessity. (Which is, after all, called the &#8220;mother of invention&#8221; for a reason.) <em>The Far Side&#8217;s <\/em>production schedule meant Larson often needed to draw something quick.
