{"id":38351,"date":"2026-08-11T09:53:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T04:53:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=38351"},"modified":"2026-08-11T09:53:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T04:53:24","slug":"ann-hui-to-receive-2026-busan-film-festivals-camellia-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=38351","title":{"rendered":"Ann Hui to Receive 2026 Busan Film Festival&#8217;s Camellia Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/ann-hui\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ann-hui_1\" data-tag=\"ann-hui\">Ann Hui<\/a>, the Hong Kong New Wave pioneer whose films have chronicled the lives of her city\u2019s ordinary and overlooked for nearly half a century, will receive the 2026 Camellia Award at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/busan-international-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_busan-international-film-festival_1\" data-tag=\"busan-international-film-festival\">Busan International Film Festival<\/a>, presented in partnership with Chanel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe 79-year-old director will accept the prize \u2014 awarded to filmmakers who have advanced the standing of women in the industry \u2014 at the festival\u2019s opening ceremony on Oct. 6 at the Busan Cinema Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIn my previous years I felt unwilling to receive such taking-stock prizes because I wished to continue making movies,\u201d Hui said in a statement. \u201cNow that I\u2019m nearly eighty and find it difficult to make a film, I think the prize comes just in time for me to appreciate it more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSince her 1979 debut <em>The Secret<\/em>, Hui has directed 27 features and two feature-length documentaries. Her work helped define the Hong Kong New Wave, with films that move across genres but return to her perennial theme \u2014 the struggles of everyday life at the margins, portrayed without sentiment: Vietnamese refugees in <em>Boat People<\/em> (1982), a daughter\u2019s reckoning with her Japanese mother in <em>Song of the Exile<\/em> (1990), the small dignities of working-class life in <em>The Way We Are<\/em> (2008), an aging servant and the family she raised in <em>A Simple Life<\/em> (2011).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHui is already one of the most decorated directors of her generation. She has won best director at the Hong Kong Film Awards six times, more than any filmmaker in the ceremony\u2019s history, and three times at Taiwan\u2019s Golden Horse Awards. Twice \u2014 with <em>Summer Snow<\/em> in 1995 and <em>A Simple Life<\/em> in 2011 \u2014 her work swept best film, director, actor and actress at the Hong Kong awards. In 2020, she became the first female director to receive Venice\u2019s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, sharing that year\u2019s honor with Tilda Swinton. She was previously honored in Busan in 2014 as the Asian Filmmaker of the Year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEstablished in 2024, the Camellia Award takes its name from a flower that is both Busan\u2019s civic emblem and, famously, Gabrielle Chanel\u2019s favorite. Korean production designer Ryu Seong-hie (<em>Oldboy<\/em>, <em>Decision to Leave<\/em>) was its inaugural recipient, followed last year by Taiwanese actress and filmmaker Sylvia Chang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI am so happy to return to Busan,\u201d Hui added, \u201cand meet an audience that is among the most savvy and cinematically literate in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHui will be honored alongside<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/busan-film-festival-michelle-yeoh-asian-filmmaker-of-the-year-1236665699\/\"> Michelle Yeoh, this year\u2019s Asian Filmmaker of the Year,<\/a> at a ceremony hosted by <em>Pachinko<\/em> star Kim Minha.
