He and Marion \u201cSuge\u201d Knight were in a car on their way to Club 662 where Shakur was to perform. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jyMHRV body-paragraph\">A car pulled up and gunshots were exchanged. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jyMHRV body-paragraph\">Shakur was hit several times as he sat in the passenger seat. He died six days later. Knight survived the shooting. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jyMHRV body-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2026\/08\/10\/tupac-shakur-murder-what-know-trial-begins-decades-after-1996-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2026\/08\/10\/tupac-shakur-murder-what-know-trial-begins-decades-after-1996-shooting\/\">The Washington Post<\/a> said that Shakur was at the height of fame when he was killed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jyMHRV body-paragraph\">Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, was arrested in 2023. His tell-all book revived the case. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jyMHRV body-paragraph\">Police said \u201cthe leader and shot caller\u201d of the gang, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2026\/08\/10\/tupac-shakur-murder-what-know-trial-begins-decades-after-1996-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2026\/08\/10\/tupac-shakur-murder-what-know-trial-begins-decades-after-1996-shooting\/\">Post<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jyMHRV body-paragraph\">\u201cMy crew was Do or Die,\u201d Davis wrote, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2026\/08\/10\/tupac-shakur-murder-what-know-trial-begins-decades-after-1996-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2026\/08\/10\/tupac-shakur-murder-what-know-trial-begins-decades-after-1996-shooting\/\">newspaper<\/a>. \u201cAll my young homeys had already been shot at least once, so that turned them into some stone-cold killers \u2014 they had the mentality of, \u2018It\u2019s either them or me, and it ain\u2019t gonna be me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jyMHRV body-paragraph\">Just under a month short of 30 years after Shakur\u2019s death, jury selection begins and is expected to last a few days. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jyMHRV body-paragraph\">Prosecutors are not saying that Davis actually pulled the trigger, and the trial is not expected to expose that bombshell. They do, however, plan on saying Davis called for Shakur\u2019s death and provided the gun used, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tupac-shakur-trial-las-vegas-duane-davis-7b5ff4fe0e0abb6d067d329a79c57040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tupac-shakur-trial-las-vegas-duane-davis-7b5ff4fe0e0abb6d067d329a79c57040\">AP<\/a> reported. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jyMHRV body-paragraph\">Davis was the co-author of \u201cCompton Street Legends,\u201d describing the shooting, with the book saying that Davis got the gun from an associate, tossed it in the back of the car, but didn\u2019t say who fired the gun. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jyMHRV body-paragraph\">Along with Davis, his nephew Orlando \u201cBaby Lane\u201d Anderson, Deandrae \u201cFreaky\u201d Smith and Terry \u201cBubble Up\u201d Brown were in the car the night of Shakur\u2019s death. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jyMHRV body-paragraph\">Smith and Brown have died since the shooting. Anderson has been suspected of pulling the trigger, but he was never charged.
