City Council\u2019s Housing and Homelessness Committee, which she has chaired since 2023, according to people familiar with the situation. <\/p>\n<p>Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson is planning to announce this week that the committee will be split into a housing committee and a homelessness committee \u2014 neither of which will be led by Raman, the people said.<\/p>\n<p>Harris-Dawson is a close ally of Mayor Karen Bass, whom Raman is challenging for re-election. He declined to comment. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to imagine that it\u2019s not related to politics. The timing of it would be too much of a coincidence,\u201d said Zev Yaroslavsky, a former Los Angeles City Councilmember and Los Angeles County supervisor who now serves as chair of the Los Angeles Initiative at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Raman\u2019s campaign didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment on the impending shakeup, which was reported earlier by the California Post. <\/p>\n<p>Alex Stack, a spokesperson for Bass\u2019 campaign, said that Raman\u2019s signature program out of the committee \u2014 to get homeless individuals off the streets by housing them through time-limited subsidies \u2014 had been a failure, costing more than $60 million and filling just three apartments so far.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNithya Raman canceled committee meetings for weeks, didn\u2019t show up to votes, and failed to deliver on building more housing or getting people off the streets,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes at a pivotal moment in the mayor\u2019s race on homelessness. <\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s unsheltered <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-07-23\/homelessness-is-up-in-los-angeles-in-a-setback-to-mayor-karen-bass\">homeless population increased<\/a> this year after two straight years of decreases, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority reported last month.<\/p>\n<p>While the citywide number has increased, the number of homeless people living on the street in Raman\u2019s district <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-07-24\/street-homelessness-went-up-in-los-angeles-in-nithya-ramans-district-it-was-nearly-cut-in-half\">decreased by 49%<\/a>, a fact she has touted as she challenges Bass. <\/p>\n<p>Raman and Bass have presented starkly different takes regarding the situation citywide and in Raman\u2019s district. <\/p>\n<p>The mayor has posited that her signature program, Inside Safe, which addresses homeless encampments by moving homeless individuals into temporary housing, was largely responsible for the drop in Raman\u2019s district and that federal and state budget cuts partially led to the increase citywide. <\/p>\n<p>She also attacked Raman\u2019s performance as the chair of the Housing and Homelessness Committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Raman takes credit for the City\u2019s work in her district, ignoring the fact that she\u2019s the Chair of the Homelessness &amp; Housing Committee for ALL of Los Angeles, Mayor Bass is working to move our city forward and address years of neglect,\u201d said Bass\u2019 campaign spokesperson Alex Stack in a statement last month about the homeless numbers. <\/p>\n<p>Raman claimed that there have only been three Inside Safe operations in her district and that her committee has been stifled by inaction from the mayor. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncil can pass legislation&#8230; move motions forward, but it is the mayor that has charge of the implementation and outcomes, she said at a press conference last month.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman is expected to lose her leadership role on the L.A.
