The military leadership remained <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5877433\/wwii-japanese-surrender-coup\/\" target=\"undefined\">committed to fighting<\/a> on despite the destruction of an entire city.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Many were convinced that Hiroshima represented a terrible but isolated event. Two cities had vanished in just three days. From Tokyo\u2019s perspective, there was no way of knowing whether the United States possessed two bombs\u2014or twenty. Even more terrifying, America now might never even need to invade Japan.
