His death was ruled an accident by the Tulare County Sheriff\u2019s Office-Coroner, but no other details were immediately released. <\/p>\n<p>The Tulare County Sheriff\u2019s Office assisted with search and rescue operations, an agency spokesperson said, but National Parks officials were the lead. A spokesperson for Sequoia &amp; Kings Canyon National Park did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Times. <\/p>\n<p>A longtime friend confirmed Whisenant\u2019s death on Facebook. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur family is devastated by this news but find solace in the fact that Jake died doing what he loves in the beautiful Sierra Nevada,\u201d <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bailee.moore.17632\/posts\/pfbid0qjjmoos2qv563Ki6vzVUu4RnEsqavym6zX2VdXZBYuDzhresHX4idtF82cUYUMsml\" target=\"_blank\">the post from Bailee Moore said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Whisenant had frequently posted about his adventures across the Sierra Nevada, not only rock climbing, but also back country skiing, biking and camping across the mountains, according to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jake.doubleyew\/\" target=\"_blank\">his Instagram page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, he helped set a new speed record for climbing El Capitan\u2019s \u201c<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-10-28\/dierdre-honnold-wolownick-rock-climbing-mom\">Lurking Fear\u201d route<\/a> in Yosemite National Park, a feat that had previously been held for more than two decades, according to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/gripped.com\/news\/new-speed-record-for-lurking-fear-on-el-cap\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gripped, a climbing magazine<\/a>. Whisenant and Brant Hysell climbed that route in 2 hours,  55 minutes and 32 seconds, they reported, several minutes faster than the prior record. <\/p>\n<p>In an <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DBt8rSNybqK\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram post<\/a> about the climb, Whisenant called it \u201ca truly magical day that I\u2019ll never forget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a place where so many legendary figures have written history, it\u2019s easy to talk yourself out of your potential, especially when you just climb for fun and don\u2019t get paid to do it,\u201d he wrote in the post. \u201cI\u2019m grateful for a partner who is down to find the limit, and for Yosemite and all of the lessons it has taught me. No doubt I will continue to be humbled and taught lessons by this place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A group that tracks several Yosemite climbing records <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/rockclimbingyosemite.com\/speed-climbing\/\" target=\"_blank\">also reported<\/a> that Whisenant and Hysell set another speed record in 2025, climbing \u201cThe Prow\u201d route on Washington Column \u2014 often considered one of the most classic rock climbs in the park, and good practice for El Capitan \u2014 in 2 hours and 52 minutes and 29 seconds.
