(Retd.) Scott Clancy, a fellow at the Canadian Global Affairs Institute and the former director of operations of NORAD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy placing logistics elements in there, preparing for the drilling, it sends a signal that we\u2019re going to go ahead and do this with or without your approval. Or we\u2019ll ask for approval after we have it, which you\u2019ll have no choice but to give,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThat sets a very difficult precedent as it pertains to the protection of sovereignty,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The oil exploration project is on a peninsula in eastern Greenland called Jameson Land Basin. The basin is \u201cone of the largest underexplored conventional hydrocarbon basins in the Western world,\u201d the company said in a statement last week.<\/p>\n<p>While Greenland Energy does not have an oil licence to operate in Greenland, it is looking to operate in collaboration with a U.K. company called 80 Mile PLC, which has one.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to shareholders last week, Greenland Energy said 80 Mile will continue \u201cto lead the permitting process\u201d for their project.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Greenland Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources in a statement last month that it was aware that 80 Mile had \u201cmoved, stored and packed rental equipment\u201d under an old licence, that permit was no longer valid.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" \u201cpermitting process continues to move forward through constructive engagement,\u201d they cannot wait to start logistical preparations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWaiting until permits are issued before initiating logistical preparations would unnecessarily delay operations and risk losing valuable time within Greenland\u2019s limited operating season,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>British Trump vowed to acquire Greenland, calling the semi-autonomous territory of Denmark \u201cour territory\u201d while addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad This enormous unsecured island is actually part of North America on the northern frontier of the Western Hemisphere,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s our territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chances of this disagreement escalating into a conflict remain low, Clancy said. This is because the U.S. and its NATO allies still have \u201cexcellent military-to-military relations,\u201d despite Trump\u2019s many grievances with the military alliance, of which Denmark is a Greenland anytime soon,\u201d Clancy said.<\/p>\n<p>Article 5 is one of the core principles of the 76-year-old NATO military alliance and states that \u201can armed attack against one NATO member shall be considered an attack against all members, and triggers an obligation for each member to come to its assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The only time the article has ever been invoked was after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.<\/p>\n<p>The alliance has never had to deal with one member attacking another.<\/p>\n<p>Clancy added, however, that it does not rule out that the U.S. could use other coercive measures to achieve its means.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States is on a path here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below soon,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. foreign policy in the Trump era will include \u201cthe use of all the elements of global power to achieve their aims,\u201d he said, including using economic
