Original producers Chris and Roberta Hanley have returned to helm the sequel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original <em>Spring Breakers<\/em> was an iconic cultural touchstone, and taking the reins as a filmmaker is a dream project for me,\u201d Thorne said in a statement. \u201cI\u2019m so grateful to Chris and Roberta Hanley for trusting me with their world. I\u2019ve always been drawn to stories that explore the unapologetic, unfiltered side of youth culture, and I can\u2019t wait to deliver a wild, high-stakes thrill ride that honors the first film while forging its own distinct path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Echoing the original, Thorne\u2019s sequel will center on \u201cfive girls entering the wildest party of their lives on spring break, only to realize they were never guests \u2014 just targets,\u201d according to\u00a0<em>Entertainment Weekly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Related Video<\/p>\n<p><em>Spring Breakers<\/em> casting director Mary Vernieu, who more recently worked on\u00a0<em>Knives Out<\/em>, and her <em>Euphoria<\/em> collaborator Jessica Kelly will hold an international casting call for Thorne\u2019s co-stars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter seeing an early cut of Bella\u2019s feature debut, <em>Color Your Hurt<\/em>, Roberta and I instantly recognized a fearless, disruptive directorial talent and a new creative voice,\u201d added Chris Hanley in a statement. \u201cHer visual style and vision to weave real-life non-actors with seasoned performers gave her version of the story an unvarnished authenticity that completely blew us away. We invited her to bring that same raw energy to her own <em>Spring Breakers<\/em> project, and her screenplay offers a brand-new, female POV. This isn\u2019t a traditional sequel. It\u2019s Bella\u2019s singular vision, capturing the rebellious DNA of the original film for a new generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes after\u00a0Thorne teased on Alex Cooper\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nlJCJGXEuH0&amp;t=1591s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><em>Call Her Daddy<\/em><\/a> podcast that she had been\u00a0asked to star, write, and direct <i id=\"mwA5k\">Spring Breakers 2<\/i>. \u201cThat was such a cultural moment in time, and everyone just becoming a woman and questioning being a woman and what that\u2019s gonna look like for the rest of your life,\u201d she said of the original.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by Harmony Korine,\u00a0<em>Spring Breakers<\/em> was released in 2013 and starred Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine as four college friends drawn into the orbit of local drug dealer Alien (James Franco). Rapper Gucci Mane also starred in the A24 film as Alien\u2019s menacing rival.<\/p>\n<p>A sequel, titled <em>Spring Breakers: The Second Coming<\/em>,\u00a0was\u00a0announced in 2014 without Korine and Franco\u2019s involvement. The actor <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/article\/2014\/05\/16\/spring-breakers-2-producers-respond-james-franco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">did not take kindly<\/a> to the idea, saying, \u201cThe original was wholly Harmony\u2019s creation and these producers are capitalizing on that innovative film to make money on a weak sequel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hanley <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2014\/film\/news\/spring-breakers-2-producers-james-franco-is-a-hypocrite-exclusive-1201182649\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">responded<\/a> by calling Franco \u201ca sequel junkie in his own reality, embracing the too big to fail studio system that is his meal ticket to dilettante artistic side shows, while he glibly attacks real independent filmmakers dedicated to independent points of view,\u201d adding that the next <em>Spring Breakers<\/em> will \u201cmake the first one look like some Disney girls trying to get a new lease on life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That project didn\u2019t come to fruition, and neither did a <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2017\/03\/spring-breakers-rebooted-as-a-digital-series-fulfill-the-prophecy-of-spring-break-forever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">digital series<\/a> announced in 2017. More recently, a new sequel,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/global\/spring-breakers-2-bella-thorne-sequel-1236397224\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><em>Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain<\/em><\/a>, was announced in May 2025 with Thorne leading the cast and Matthew Bright (<em>Freeway<\/em>) as director.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Thorne\u2019s creative vision is for a \u201clit as fuck\u201d sequel from \u201cstart to finish,\u201d as she told <em>Call Her Daddy<\/em> host Alex Cooper.
