It just was not my makeup,\u201d he explained. \u201cIn fact, if I have any afflictions, it\u2019s probably being a congenital optimist. Which has helped many times, and it\u2019s also gotten me \u2014 I\u2019ve walked foolishly head-on into a Mack truck because of my optimism. Or, as my forever-funny friend David Fincher will say, \u2018Yeah, you see the glass as half full, but it\u2019s half full of urine.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Oscar winner continued, \u201cAnyway, I\u2019ve never been suicidal except for one little period. And in that one little period, I just thought \u2014 I just couldn\u2019t \u2014 just didn\u2019t see a way out. The pain was so oppressive that \u2014 I wasn\u2019t going to act on this, but I could feel \u2014 I could feel the cold steel of the bullet in my head, and it felt like relief. And I thought, \u2018Oh, OK, now I understand \u2014 I understand suicide, in the sense that it\u2019s just relief. It\u2019s just looking for relief from the pain.
