Though Cunningham has since blamed \u201cWNBA media\u201d for the storm that followed and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/opinion\/in-retrospect-sophie-cunningham-is-actually-okay-with-shutting-up-and-dribbling-i-want-to-get-back-to-basketball\/?mc_cid=fa890e140e&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/opinion\/in-retrospect-sophie-cunningham-is-actually-okay-with-shutting-up-and-dribbling-i-want-to-get-back-to-basketball\/?mc_cid%3Dfa890e140e%26mc_eid%3DUNIQID&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1786467902185000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3L8zIb4mv6OXZlJRHFCtV5\">said she wants<\/a> to \u201cget back to basketball,\u201d her cause has been forcefully taken up by right-wing media, and the story has only grown ever since.<\/p>\n<p>Whispers of the Cunningham saga have popped up in newsletters throughout the month, but that low murmur kicked into overdrive over the weekend and this morning. And, per at least one of our authors, it seems that Cunningham might not be quite as tired of the story as she\u2019s claimed.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">THREE TAKES<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/u\/7\/?mc_cid=fa890e140e&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID#search\/sophie+cunningham\/FMfcgzQhVrBXsGkXVZMKpwhJJtcdCSfj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Daily OutKick<\/strong><\/a><strong>, OK<\/strong>\u2014\u201cThey\u201d really \u201chate Sophie Cunningham,\u201d authors at OutKick insisted today. The right-wing sports commentary site has been pushing the Cunningham story harder than anyone out there for weeks, and today they saw their payoff as many of their newsletter compatriots picked up the story as well. This weekend, the Fever met the Chicago Sky and\u00a0<strong>DiJonai Carrington<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cleveled\u201d Cunningham \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NGpwi23QBSE&amp;mc_cid=fa890e140e&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v%3DNGpwi23QBSE%26mc_cid%3Dfa890e140e%26mc_eid%3DUNIQID&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1786467902185000&amp;usg=AOvVaw12l7A-tJz3hu6NaF-WUCdx\">with a brutal hit<\/a>\u00a0that sent fans into a frenzy.\u201d Carrington was given a flagrant 2 foul and ejected from the game.<\/p>\n<p>Cunningham herself has been no stranger to delivering exactly that kind of blow to others (which, to be fair,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/49563141\/sky-carrington-tossed-hard-foul-fever-cunningham?mc_cid=fa890e140e&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/49563141\/sky-carrington-tossed-hard-foul-fever-cunningham?mc_cid%3Dfa890e140e%26mc_eid%3DUNIQID&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1786467902185000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0ItWjSFit7vqOV0fqCUyyM\">she acknowledged<\/a>\u00a0while speaking to reporters after the game). But \u201cinstead of everyone agreeing that maybe clotheslining an opponent is bad,\u201d a whole bunch of \u201cmedia dorks and former teammates rushed to defend Carrington.\u201d As a result, Cunningham has \u201cofficially become the match that keeps setting fire to the WNBA\u2019s ugliest impulses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/sophie-cunninghams-common-sense?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;mc_cid=fa890e140e&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/sophie-cunninghams-common-sense?utm_source%3Dsubstack%26utm_medium%3Demail%26mc_cid%3Dfa890e140e%26mc_eid%3DUNIQID&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1786467902185000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3zjQp4fDSavqOBI5eTpsNa\"><strong>The Free Press<\/strong><\/a><strong>, Kat Rosenfield<\/strong>\u2014The Free Press has been another outlet which has spent a lot of time on Cunningham the past few weeks, and Carrington\u2019s foul must have inspired the newsletter editors to reup Rosenfield\u2019s initial July 30 take, which was found in the stack today. Rosenfield was apparently so inspired by Cunningham that she found it appropriate to invoke 1984 and what happens when \u201cthe unstoppable force of political ideology crashes into the immovable object of the god\u2019s honest truth.\u201d Cunningham\u2019s stance on transgender girls and women in sports is \u201ccommon sense,\u201d Rosenfield also insisted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/u\/7\/popout?ver=135ea4odo4bhy&amp;search=inbox&amp;th=%23thread-f%3A1873145330128524928&amp;cvid=9&amp;mc_cid=fa890e140e&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Page Six Hollywood<\/strong><\/a><strong>, Ian Mohr<\/strong>\u2014Despite Cunningham appearing to be eager to move past the entire debacle, Mohr revealed today the basketball player is apparently \u201cshopping a book\u201d and may \u201cfind herself at the center of a bidding war, we hear, with the timely tome.\u201d Though a rep from Cunningham didn\u2019t get back to Mohr to confirm or deny the story, he pointed out that she has a lot going for her, including the second-best selling jersey in the league and all-important social media clout (Cunningham has 3.7 million followers on Instagram). She\u2019s also found supporters in\u00a0<strong>Riley Gaines\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Stephen A. Smith<\/strong>\u00a0and detractors in\u00a0<strong>Megan Rapinoe<\/strong>, all of whom could end up deliberately or inadvertently promoting a book \u2014 should one ever materialize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_5174368971465723675mcePastedContent\"><strong>TAKEAWAY<\/strong>: The furor surrounding Cunningham has been building for weeks, and it\u2019s not too surprising it\u2019s gotten such prominent placement in today\u2019s stack. Though it seems she\u2019s attempted to retract a bit, Cunningham may be learning the hard way that our statements and stories can take on a second life potentially more long-lasting and intense than the first if they\u2019re picked up by bad-faith actors looking for clicks. Like with the breathless coverage of <strong>Dr. Fauci<\/strong> in recent days, this is one of those stories that the more people are talking about it, the better it is for the Right.
