could it be true that they have a favorite?<\/p>\n<p>According to an ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/archive\/releases\/2013\/Q4\/study-is-moms-favorite-child-always-the-same.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" staff-link\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">project<\/a> that began data collection in 2001, they actually do. The study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family found that parental favoritism persists well into adulthood and is also one of the single largest drivers of severe sibling conflict.<\/p>\n<p>About two-thirds to three-quarters of mothers reported having a preferred child, and these preferences tend to remain stable over many years.<\/p>\n<p>This family dynamic has been identified and studied across many different cultures. One <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7399693\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" staff-link\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">study<\/a> found that it occurs in around 65% of families. A majority of children also report perceiving favoritism even when their parents deny it exists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the biggest predictors of who remained the favorite was mother\u2019s perception of similarity between herself and her child. Mothers were likely to continue to prefer children who they perceived were similar to them in their beliefs and values, as well as to prefer children who had cared for them before,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/archive\/releases\/2013\/Q4\/study-is-moms-favorite-child-always-the-same.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" staff-link\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said<\/a> Megan Gilligan, an assistant professor in human development and family studies at Iowa State University.<\/p>\n<p>Gender similarity also plays a role in long-term biases. This aligns with past <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1525\/sop.2006.49.2.139\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" staff-link\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">research<\/a> showing that mother-daughter bonds are usually the strongest, closest, and most supportive parent-child relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Birth order is another major factor. Studies show that youngest children often hold a unique kind of power, remaining \u201cthe baby\u201d of the family long after they have outgrown the role.<\/p>\n<p>But when such connections sour into toxic favoritism, no sibling escapes unharmed. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purduealumnus.org\/playing-favorites\/features\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" staff-link\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Experts<\/a> believe it can have psychological consequences for all of the adult children, regardless of which sibling is the chosen one.
