However, its thematic and narrative roots come from <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/differences-between-original-blade-runner-movie-novel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Philip K. Dick&#8217;s <em>Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Long before <em>Blade Runner<\/em> hit the big screens and gradually came to be known as one of the most ambitious sci-fi flicks of its time, Philip K. Dick penned his pre-cyberpunk masterpiece. He was way ahead of his time as, in the late &#8217;60s itself, he was able to envision a future with everything from manufactured memories to Replicants with more empathy than humans.<\/p>\n<p>Ridley Scott borrowed these ideas for his ambitious sci-fi movie project and gave them an even more cyberpunk edge by adding a layer of noir, rain, and neon. Cyberpunk was yet to establish its identity as a distinct sci-fi subgenre in the early &#8217;80s. By merging Philip K. Dick&#8217;s vision with a world that felt lived-in, decaying, and suffocatingly corporate, Ridley Scott helped shape cyberpunk&#8217;s true foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Philip K. Dick&#8217;s novels are known for being ridden with abstract prose and unconventional storytelling structures. Through <em>Blade Runner<\/em>, Ridley Scott made <em>Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep<\/em>&#8216;s complex philosophical underpinnings more tangible and accessible to the masses.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, owing to the nature of his complex storytelling, Philip K. Dick was never a big fan of Hollywood adaptations of his work. Dick in the &#8217;60s and Ridley Scott in the &#8217;80s. <em>Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep<\/em> and several other Philip K. Dick stories dabble with ideas surrounding inverted power structures and the subjective nature of reality.<\/p>\n<p><em>Blade Runner 2099<\/em> will seemingly touch on these themes with its portrayal of the complex dynamic between a human pretending to be a Replicant and a real Replicant. Michelle Yeoh&#8217;s character, Olwen, will also deal with the weight of her morality as her pre-programmed lifespan nearly reaches its end.<\/p>\n<p>This could perfectly parallel Roy Batty\u2019s existential plea to Tyrell and Dick\u2019s core fascination with artificial beings possessing death-related anxieties. Philip K. Dick&#8217;s daughter, Isa Dick Hackett, is also involved with the series as one of its executive producers, which gives the show even more credibility.<\/p>\n<p>Ridley Scott, too, serves as the executive producer via Scott Free Productions. His involvement not only guarantees continuity in world-building but also promises that the show will retain the previous movies&#8217; rain-slicked industrial decay visuals against bright neon.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Prime Video<\/strong> <strong>sci-fi<\/strong> show will likely have its own distinct elements as well, but it is hard not to see how it remains rooted in <strong>Philip K.
