href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/21\/us-news\/daredevil-base-jumpers-scatter-among-the-trees-after-illegally-leaping-off-yosemites-el-capitan\/\">famed El Capitan<\/a> in record time has died in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/08\/us-news\/missing-ucsb-student-found-dead-after-sierra-mountain-hike\/\">an accident in the Sierra Nevada<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jake Whisenant, a Mammoth Lakes climber known for his speed ascents, died August 3, according to the Tulare County Sheriff\u2019s Office Coroner.<\/p>\n<p>Officials have not released further details about the circumstances of the community.<\/p>\n<p>Whisenant gained national attention in October 2024 when he and South Lake Tahoe climber Brant Hysell completed the Lurking Fear route on El Capitan in just 2 hours, 55 minutes and 32 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Climbing magazine Gripped reported that the ascent broke the previous speed record held by Yuji Hirayama and Nick Fowler.<\/p>\n<p>Whisenant continued climbing in Yosemite.
