The concern was understandable. Throughout the 2000s and early 2010s, most live-action anime adaptations were flops, leading to a belief that the medium simply couldn&#8217;t translate. No film better represents that era than <em>Dragonball Evolution<\/em>, the long-awaited Hollywood adaptation of <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/db\/tv-show\/dragon-ball-z-1989\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Dragon Ball Z<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, which arrived in 2009 carrying enormous expectations before quickly becoming one of the genre&#8217;s most infamous disappointments.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><\/p>\n<p> Instead of delivering the explosive martial arts spectacle that made <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em> a global phenomenon, <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/dragon-ball-evolution-bad-live-action-anime-blessing-akira-toriyama-op-ed\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Dragonball Evolution<\/em> offered a heavily altered interpretation<\/a> that stripped away the franchise&#8217;s identity. Son Goku (Justin Chatwin) bore little resemblance to his anime counterpart, and the story abandoned the scale and relentless action that defined Akira Toriyama&#8217;s series. Rather than embracing the exaggerated energy of <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em>, <em>Dragonball Evolution<\/em> attempted to ground itself with a more realistic tone, resulting in an adaptation that felt disconnected from almost everything fans loved.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, the closest Hollywood has ever come to making a great live-action <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em> movie wasn&#8217;t a <em>Dragon Ball<\/em> movie at all. In 2013, Zack Snyder&#8217;s <em>Man of Steel<\/em> delivered the kind of superpowered spectacle audiences had hoped to see in <em>Dragonball Evolution<\/em>. Featuring another immensely powerful alien hero sent to Earth from a doomed world, Man of Steel captured the spirit of <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em> near-perfectly. Rather than relying on grounded brawling, the 2013 DC Comics movie embraces overwhelming speed and momentum. Superman and Zod rocket through skyscrapers, smash each other across entire city blocks, and exchange devastating blows while flying at supersonic speeds. It\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/best-dragon-ball-fights-ranked\/\" target=\"_blank\">high-impact combat of <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em><\/a>, but in live-action.<\/p>\n<p>The combat in <em>Man of Steel<\/em> feeling like <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em> was no coincidence, either. Storyboard artist Jay Oliva, who helped design many of <em>Man of Steel<\/em>&#8216;s action sequences, openly acknowledged the influence in 2018. Responding to a fan on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jayoliva1\/status\/1003647405231751169\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><em>X<\/em><\/a>, he wrote: &#8220;<em>Of course I LOVE anime! My MoS fight was basically me riffing off of dragonball z<\/em>&#8220;. Olivia\u2019s admission explains why the film&#8217;s action feels so immediately familiar to <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em> fans.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than toning down the bombasticness of the combat like <em>Dragonball Evolution<\/em> did for reasons nobody understands, <em>Man of Steel<\/em> fully embraced the sheer scale of what happens when godlike beings collide. Every punch sends opponents hurtling through buildings, every chase unfolds across the sky at incredible speed, and every confrontation escalates into city-shattering destruction. Those are precisely the elements that have defined <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/best-dragon-ball-fights-all-time\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em>&#8216;s best fight scenes<\/a> since the Saiyan Saga.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Goku being nowhere to be seen, this ability to convey such huge amounts of power and energy makes <em>Man of Steel<\/em> feel considerably closer to <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em> than <em>Dragonball Evolution<\/em> ever managed. Strip both stories down to their broadest narrative beats, and <em>Man of Steel<\/em> and <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em>&#8216;s Saiyan Saga are surprisingly alike. Both center on a baby sent to Earth from a dying homeworld who is raised as a human and then has to fight members his own race determined to conquer the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Kal-El&#8217;s journey in <em>Man of Steel<\/em> (and almost every other version of Superman that includes Zod) <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/superman-goku-same-origin-story\/\" target=\"_blank\">closely mirrors that of Goku<\/a> in <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em>. Both heroes reject the destiny imposed by their birth, choosing instead to protect the people who raised them. Their strongest enemies are members of their own species who believe overwhelming strength justifies conquest. General Zod&#8217;s arrival echoes Vegeta and the Saiyans during <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em>&#8216;s opening arc, and outside the obvious differences in specifics, both <em>Man of Steel<\/em> and the Saiyan Saga are essentially telling the same story.<\/p>\n<p>Those narrative parallels make <em>Man of Steel<\/em> feel surprisingly faithful to the heart of <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em>, even though it\u2019s based on an entirely different property and leans much harder into superhero sci-fi than it does martial arts fantasy. In contrast, <em>Dragonball Evolution<\/em> chose not to adapt the Saiyan Saga, <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em>\u2019s most accessible narrative arc, at all. Superman is not Goku, Zod is not Vegeta, and despite the similarities, fans are still waiting to see those iconic Saiyan battles recreated in a major Hollywood production. Unfortunately, <em>Dragonball Evolution<\/em> remains the franchise&#8217;s only live-action adaptation, and there are currently no announced plans for <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/dragon-ball-new-live-action-adaptation-evolution-op-ed\/\" target=\"_blank\">a new live-action <em>Dragon Ball<\/em><\/a> movie or TV show.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the challenge is that <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em> is arguably one of the hardest anime franchises to translate into live-action. Its stylized character designs, exaggerated energy attacks, impossible martial arts, and escalating power levels require enormous visual effects budgets while also demanding complete faithfulness to a world that intentionally ignores realism. After the failure of <em>Dragonball Evolution<\/em>, it is understandable why studios have been reluctant to revisit the property.<\/p>\n<p>However, that reluctance may not last forever thanks to a key TV show released in 2023 that proves the era of <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/live-action-anime-bad-reasons-why\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Dragonball Evolution<\/em> and other failed anime adaptations<\/a> like it may be over. Netflix&#8217;s live-action <em>One Piece<\/em> demonstrated that even anime once considered impossible to adapt can succeed when creators respect the source material while making thoughtful adjustments for a new medium. With two highly praised seasons so far and a third on the way, the success of Netflix\u2019s <em>One Piece<\/em> has undoubtedly changed the conversation surrounding live-action anime adaptations throughout the industry.<\/p>\n<p>There are no plans for a live-action <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em> movie or TV show yet, but the circumstances are very different from 2009. <em>Dragonball Evolution<\/em> may have been a crash course in how badly it could go wrong, but then <em>Man of Steel<\/em> arrived to prove that delivering the scale, speed, and spectacle <em>DBZ<\/em> demands isn\u2019t impossible. Combined with <em>One Piece<\/em>&#8216;s success, the foundation now exists for a studio to finally attempt the live-action <strong><em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em><\/strong> movie fans have wanted for
