Not at all amazingly, it went to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/art-carney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_art-carney_1\" data-tag=\"art-carney\">Art Carney<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSeventy years ago, the gangly, loose-limbed comedian arrived at the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria in New York (the Emmys were a bicoastal telecast then) \u2014 not in a rumpled vest and white T-shirt but a tuxedo \u2014 and accepted a trophy for best actor in a supporting role. Perhaps his speech began with something like, \u201cHelloooo, Ralphie boy!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOf course, Jackie Gleason was indisputably the star of the show. As his character Ralph Kramden so often reminded Alice, his long- suffering TV wife (Audrey Meadows), he was king of the castle \u2014 in his case, a dreary, barely decorated walk-up in Bushwick. But it was Ralph\u2019s upstairs neighbor, the gleefully unflappable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/ed-norton\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ed-norton_1\" data-tag=\"ed-norton\">Ed Norton<\/a>, who often got the last laugh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThey were a perfect comic pairing: Ralph a hot-headed blowhard full of coiled rage, Ed as cool as a cucumber \u2014 and often as dim-witted. He never merely stepped into a scene \u2014 Carney turned every entrance into a quirky, nudnik overture. When Ralph wanted him to sign something \u2014 a recurring bit \u2014 Norton always had to limber up first, waving his arms and fluttering his fingers, until Ralph inevitably exploded in impatience (Carney later revealed he copied the gesture from his father, who made a big show of signing his report cards).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBeneath it all, though, there was a tenderness to Carney\u2019s character, and to Ed\u2019s friendship with Ralph.
