Matt Lodder, an art historian and author of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Tattoos-Untold-History-Modern-Art\/dp\/0300269390\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Tattoos: The Untold History of a Modern Art<\/a><\/em>, notes that as tattooing has gotten \u201cbigger,\u201d there are fewer people who are \u201cheavily tattooed\u201d\u2014rather, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/37f0594c-0eea-47ae-973d-77c761270ad5?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a>, \u201cThere\u2019s a divergence between people that want one or two tattoos and those that are interested in the subculture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <strong>Bored Panda<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/caitlynlong_tattooer\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Caitlyn Long<\/a>, a tattoo artist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/capeelectrictattoo\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Cape Electric Tattoo<\/a> in Cape Town, South Africa, echoed a similar sentiment, saying that \u201cwhen everyone from the punk rock dude in the band to your great-aunt Sally has a tattoo\u201d and everyone becomes an \u201cinsider,\u201d tattooing can lose \u201cthat little bit of magic, that sense of mystery and rebelliousness it always had.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Even so, Caitlyn sees this as another stage in tattooing\u2019s constant evolution, with artists adapting to new technology and changing tastes while trying to preserve the craft\u2019s distinctive character.
