This marks the third-best domestic sophomore weekend in history (not adjusted for inflation), behind 2015’s Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens ($149.2 million) and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame ($147.3 million), which are the two highest-grossing domestic releases of all time. Spider-Man has landed leaps and bounds ahead of the previous third-best title, which was 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War ($114.7 million).

Its projected cumulative domestic gross by the end of Sunday is $653 million, which marks the best 10-day haul in history.

Ultimately, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is heading toward a sophomore weekend drop of roughly 60%, which is not altogether uncommon for a superhero blockbuster. This drop shouldn’t affect its overall prospects, as 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home dropped a significantly worse 67.5%, it still became the eighth highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide. In fact, of the previous 37 MCU movies, 32 had drops of more than 50%, 13 had drops of more than 60%, and one (The Marvels) had a drop of more than 70%.

While it’s experiencing a sizable drop, Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s record-breaking debut gave it a significant head start. In fact, its projected sophomore weekend haul is bigger than the domestic opening weekend grosses of all but two 2026 releases, namely Pixar’s Toy Story 5 ($159.7 million) and Spider-Man itself. It considerably outpaced the smattering of new releases that arrived during the first full weekend of August, which include the high-concept romance One Night Only (which is projected to debut at No. 3 behind The Odyssey) and the belated comedy sequel Super Troopers 3 (which is expected to debut at No. 5).

Given Spider-Man‘s current momentum, it remains to be seen what title is ultimately able to topple it from its perch at the top of the domestic chart. During its third weekend, the biggest contender is probably The End of Oak Street, a sci-fi movie where Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor must protect their family from dinosaurs when their suburban neighborhood is mysteriously transported back in time. Even if Brand New Day drops more than 50%, Oak Street would probably have to debut above $60 million, which it may not be able to do, allowing the superhero movie to reign supreme.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day could have more trouble facing off against the horror sequel Insidious: Out of the Further during its fourth weekend, which is being followed by Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars and the long-awaited comedy Coyote vs. Acme the next weekend. However, if all of those movies underperform, Spider-Man could conquer the chart all throughout August, until the arrival of more promising September titles such as Practical Magic 2 and Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil.

<!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! However, One Night Only doesn’t have the benefit of coming out during the holiday season, which tends to give titles slow-and-steady growth. Given that fact, plus a disappointing 46% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it seems unlikely that it will have the same momentum as its predecessor.

The belated comedy sequel Super Troopers 3 also landed on the chart at No. 4 despite turning out a considerably lower debut than 2018’s Super Troopers 2 ($15.2 million). Meanwhile, Eli Roth’s controversial new horror movie Ice Cream Man is projected to open at No. 8 with the director’s lowest debut per-screen average in history for a domestic wide release.

With two new titles on the chart, a pair of holdover titles have fallen off, with Minions & Monsters dropping from No. 4 to No. 6 during its sixth weekend and Disney’s live-action Moana remake going from No. 5 to No. 7 in its fifth.

Both family movies had disappointing debuts but managed to stick around on the chart for quite a while. Minions has already climbed past a respectable $450 million worldwide, which is more than enough for it to break even against its reported $85 million budget. Moana, on the other hand, is approaching $300 million worldwide and is still set to lose a considerable sum thanks to its enormous reported budget of $250 million. However, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is already putting Disney back on top.

Enjoy ScreenRant’s box office coverage?
