Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/09\/19\/aoc-2028-democrats-president-senate\" target=\"_blank\">left the door open<\/a> Sunday to either running for president in 2028 or challenging fellow New Yorker and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong> Ocasio-Cortez is emerging as a leading potential heir to the movement built by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/03\/01\/aoc-liberal-democrats-2028\" target=\"_blank\">whichever path<\/a> she chooses could reshape the future of Democratic politics.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>Driving the news:<\/strong> ABC&#8217;s Jonathan Karl asked Ocasio-Cortez on &#8220;This Week&#8221; whether she would run for president, after noting a <a href=\"https:\/\/scholars.unh.edu\/survey_center_polls\/983\/\" target=\"_blank\">recent New Hampshire poll<\/a> showed her leading the prospective Democratic field.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;I&#8217;m focused on winning the midterms. I&#8217;m running for Congress right now,&#8221; she responded, before adding, &#8220;I haven&#8217;t ruled out the possibility, and I&#8217;m very humbled to the tremendous amount of support out there.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>When Karl asked whether running for Senate against Schumer was also possible, Ocasio-Cortez said that &#8220;anything is possible at this juncture.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The big picture:<\/strong> Ocasio-Cortez cast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/detroit\/2026\/08\/05\/michigan-senate-primary-el-sayed-wins-against-stevens\" target=\"_blank\">Abdul El-Sayed&#8217;s victory in Michigan<\/a> and a broader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/08\/05\/house-democrats-primary-shri-thanedar-2026\" target=\"_blank\">wave of insurgent Democratic victories<\/a> as signs the party is undergoing a generational &#8220;renewal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Millennials are not, you know, punk kids anymore. We&#8217;re grown adults with mortgages and kids,&#8221; she said.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;That generation is starting to be decisive at the polls,&#8221; she added. &#8220;We&#8217;re taking the reins.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Zoom in: <\/strong>Ocasio-Cortez also sounded markedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/04\/12\/aoc-progressives-2028-democrats\" target=\"_blank\">more pragmatic<\/a> than the young challenger who shocked the Democratic establishment in 2018.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Explaining why she has stayed out of primaries against House colleagues this cycle, Ocasio-Cortez said &#8220;politics is also a workplace.&#8221; Her endorsements have largely targeted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/06\/14\/aoc-endorsements-democrats-winning\" target=\"_blank\">open seats<\/a>, plus unseating incumbents in New York&#8217;s state legislature.<\/li>\n<li>She also distanced herself from some of the left&#8217;s most polarizing positions in 2020.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Rhetoric in that time is not rhetoric that we would use today,&#8221; she said as she approvingly cited New York City Council member Chi Oss\u00e9&#8217;s viral <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/OsseChi\/status\/2057879171108376970\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Woke 1 was crazyyyy&#8221;<\/a> response to one of his own old posts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:<\/strong> Ocasio-Cortez says her focus remains on the midterms. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>But Sunday&#8217;s interview did little to tamp down <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/05\/24\/aoc-takes-more-steps-toward-2028-run-for-president\" target=\"_blank\">the 2028 speculation<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
