When you\u2019re one of the best football players on the planet \u2014 and your success can mean the difference between a championship run and an early offseason \u2014 teams are willing to pay accordingly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NFL has also always been a \u201cwhat have you done for me lately?\u201d league. One great season can completely change a player\u2019s value, while one bad year can suddenly make even a massive contract feel questionable. That pressure is especially intense at quarterback, where teams know how difficult it is to find a legitimate franchise player and are often willing to pay a premium once they believe they have one. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there\u2019s the waiting game. Agents and players have become increasingly comfortable watching what the next star at their position receives before agreeing to a new deal of their own. One record-breaking extension establishes a new benchmark, another player jumps over it months \u2014 or sometimes days \u2014 later, and the market keeps climbing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We just saw it happen with running backs. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantafalcons.com\/news\/bijan-robinson-contract-extension\">Atlanta gave Bijan Robinson a three-year extension <\/a>with a base value of $66.75 million, only for Detroit to follow with a three-year, $67.5 million<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prideofdetroit.com\/detroit-lions-news\/166537\/detroit-lions-jahmyr-gibbs-record-breaking-contract-extension\"> extension for Jahmyr Gibbs, <\/a>making Gibbs the NFL\u2019s highest-paid running back at $22.5 million annually. Still, that number shows just how different the quarterback market is: neither superstar back comes remotely close to the league\u2019s overall Top 10 by average annual salary. According to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/photos\/ranking-the-nfl-s-biggest-contracts-for-2026\">NFL\u2019s current 2026 contract rankings<\/a>, here are the 10 highest paid NFL players by average annual value. <\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-1-patrick-mahomes-kansas-city-chiefs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Patrick Mahomes \u2014 Kansas City Chiefs<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2026 Annual Salary: $63.1 Million <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There isn\u2019t much explaining necessary when it comes to why Mahomes gets paid. Multiple MVPs, multiple championships and a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 that already puts him alongside some of the greatest quarterbacks ever have made him the standard of this generation. The bigger question entering 2026 is his health after tearing his ACL and LCL in December 2025. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/patrick-mahomes-worked-seven-hours-a-day-rehab-his-acl-12035945\">Mahomes spent the offseason attacking his rehab and has made impressive progress during training camp<\/a>, but Kansas City\u2019s championship ceiling is once again tied directly to how close he can get to being himself. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"listicle-slide\" data-page-number=\"1\">\n<h3 id=\"h-2-dak-prescott-dallas-cowboys\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. But the money also comes with enormous expectations. The Cowboys have missed the postseason in consecutive seasons, and Prescott himself has called making the playoffs in 2026 the \u201cminimum.\u201d At $60 million annually, simply putting up numbers won\u2019t be enough anymore \u2014 Dallas needs January success. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"listicle-slide\" data-page-number=\"2\">\n<h3 id=\"h-t-3-matthew-stafford-los-angeles-rams\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">T-3. The veteran threw for 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns against just eight interceptions, delivering the best season of his career, while taking home the MVP trophy. Stafford has already brought a Super Bowl to Los Angeles, and after another elite season, the Rams clearly believe their championship window remains open as long as No. 9 is running the offense.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"listicle-slide\" data-page-number=\"3\">\n<h3 id=\"h-t-3-josh-allen-buffalo-bills\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">T-3. Josh Allen \u2014 Buffalo Bills <\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2026 Annual Salary: $55 Million <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allen has become the face of the Bills and one of the few quarterbacks capable of taking over a game with his arm or legs. Buffalo rewarded that with a six-year, $330 million extension carrying $250 million in practical guarantees. The regular season r\u00e9sum\u00e9 is already there; 2026 is once again about whether Allen can finally push Buffalo through the AFC gauntlet and deliver the franchise its long-awaited Super Bowl. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"listicle-slide\" data-page-number=\"4\">\n<h3 id=\"h-t-3-jordan-love-green-bay-packers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">T-3. Detroit has surrounded him with an expensive collection of offensive talent, including the newly paid Gibbs, meaning expectations remain extremely high. Goff doesn\u2019t have to carry everything himself, but he does have to keep one of football\u2019s most talented offenses among the NFL\u2019s best.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"listicle-slide\" data-page-number=\"9\">\n<h3 id=\"h-10-justin-herbert-los-angeles-chargers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. But the next hurdle is impossible to ignore: postseason success. Herbert remains winless in three career playoff starts, and for a quarterback making more than $50 million annually, getting the Chargers into January is no longer enough.
