{"id":34023,"date":"2026-08-09T06:04:21","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T01:04:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=34023"},"modified":"2026-08-09T06:04:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T01:04:21","slug":"one-night-only-writer-producer-talk-movies-no-premarital-sex-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=34023","title":{"rendered":"One Night Only Writer, Producer Talk Movie&#8217;s No Premarital Sex Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEver since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JRG244IfrRE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">official trailer dropped<\/a> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/callum-turner-interview-one-night-only-bond-dua-lipa-1236617120\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Callum Turner<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/monica-barbaro\/\" id=\"auto-tag_monica-barbaro_1\" data-tag=\"monica-barbaro\">Monica Barbaro<\/a> rom-com <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/one-night-only-review-monica-barbaro-callum-turner-1236664648\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One Night Only<\/a><\/em>, quickly racking up millions of views on its way to its nearly 40 million total, internet commentators have had <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.them.us\/entertainment\/tv-and-movies\/one-night-only\" target=\"_blank\">a lot of<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/megannn_lynne\/status\/2080613596434772002?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">questions<\/a> about the film\u2019s central premise in which premarital sex is illegal apart from one 12-hour period a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHow is this law enforced? Are people breaking the law? How did this legislation pass? What counts as \u201csex\u201d under this new mandate? Are marriage (and divorce) rates skyrocketing? What about affairs?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRest assured: Some of those questions are answered in the movie, and explanations are starting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/one-night-only-director-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">trickle out online<\/a> for those unconcerned about spoilers. Beyond that, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/one-night-only\/\" id=\"auto-tag_one-night-only_1\" data-tag=\"one-night-only\">One Night Only<\/a><\/em> writer, Travis Braun, who saw his screenplay top the 2024 Black List, has answers, but they\u2019re not all in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/will-gluck\/\" id=\"auto-tag_will-gluck_1\" data-tag=\"will-gluck\">Will Gluck<\/a>-directed Universal movie now in theaters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI set out to write a movie about the circus that is modern dating, and I thought how fun if we could set that all in one night, and I have answers to those questions, and some of them are in the movie,\u201d Braun told <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> at the <em>One Night Only<\/em> premiere earlier this week in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBraun said he definitely thought about the specific rules of the film\u2019s alternate reality, framed as three years on from the no-sex act being passed, but didn\u2019t want to get too deep into the politics of the world of the movie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s a big mythology that I\u2019ve built out and then as you develop a movie you start to pare down and you go: What does an audience really care about, and what are they showing up to see? For me the answer is always a love story, romance,\u201d he told <em>THR<\/em>. \u201cI hope they can come in and we\u2019ll show them how this world functions, and then they can just enjoy the movie and have fun. The whole focus of this was love story and romance first, and the world-building obviously has to make sense and has to be there, but ultimately we weren\u2019t interested in getting into the politics of it. We wanted to tell a story about these two incredible people trying to find love on this crazy night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tProducer Jacqueline Monetta, who brought Braun\u2019s script to Gluck, said they didn\u2019t want moviegoers to have all of the answers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI had a million questions. I was like, \u2018What does this mean? What does this world look like? How do people communicate? What\u2019s different?\u2019 And that\u2019s I think what\u2019s so smart about it,\u201d she said of <em>One Night Only<\/em>\u2018s \u201cbig idea, high-concept\u201d premise. \u201cWe don\u2019t answer every question in the movie, purposefully, because we want those questions to be had on the car ride home. We want people to keep talking about it and really think about what would this mean for our world, what does it mean for our world now. But I think Will and I were really specific on what questions we wanted to answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/movies\/comments\/1vaxnnf\/hi_rmovies_im_will_gluck_director_of_easy_a\/?solution=84aa5405709091ae84aa5405709091ae&amp;js_challenge=1&amp;token=7afd7253fec22262ff1c52b1703fe9ec862f1c3a23cf57bc329102e21a633696&amp;jsc_orig_r=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">recent Reddit AMA<\/a>, Gluck also detailed how he and his team approached the world building of the movie while not wanting it to be all about the mandate and offered prospective moviegoers hints for where to find the answers to their questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe spent a lot of time talking about the rules of the world, and if you\u2019ve seen the movie, or when you see the movie, you\u2019ll see that the rules of the world and the world building are all in the background,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s on TVs, signage, in thrown-away lines, because we didn\u2019t want to give the world short shrift, but we didn\u2019t want the movie to be about that. It\u2019s another way I want people to see this. If they see it more than once, they\u2019ll pick up so many more rules of the world in the background. A lot of the questions that I\u2019ve been getting after people have seen the movie are actually answered in the movie, which is by design because I want people maybe not to know them. So, yes, it was a tricky tightrope to have them there, but not for the movie to be about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTurner meanwhile echoes Braun\u2019s advice for curious prospective moviegoers: \u201cGo see the film!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cYou\u2019ll realize pretty quickly what the realm is that you\u2019re working within and it\u2019s a comedy,\u201d Turner says of what inquisitive filmgoers will find. \u201cThere are no great political undertones, I don\u2019t think.
