I think it\u2019s a mistake,\u201d Trump told Punchbowl News.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not taking positions,\u201d he continued. \u201cI just think it\u2019s a mistake because there are other communities that want it. When a community wants it, it means a lot of money is going to come into that community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president appeared to be <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/6008183-abbott-data-centers-power-texas-grid\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/6008183-abbott-data-centers-power-texas-grid\/\">referring to a move<\/a> from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Monday to place a moratorium on data centers until regulatory agencies complete their audit on the centers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur top priority is to protect Texans\u2019 safety and quality of life,\u201d Abbott said in a statement at the time. \u201cAny project that fails to comply with the requirements set forth by the PUCT and ERCOT, and by state law, must be denied connection to the Texas grid. Simply put, Texans must come first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Trump said in the new interview that, if he were a governor, he \u201cwould want data centers so badly.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaxes are going to go way down because this is a tremendous source of income,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also pushed back on criticism of the data centers, including that they\u2019re unsightly.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think they\u2019re unsightly. I mean, I\u2019m looking at some of these data centers, the most incredible buildings I\u2019ve ever seen,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are tremendously important for the economics. I mean, this is \u2014 for Texas to say no to data centers is a mistake in the sense that it could be bigger than oil,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also warned against pushing back against data centers, arguing the U.S. cannot let China \u201cbeat us\u201d on the issue.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t let China beat us at this. You know, a lot of people think that the campaign that\u2019s being put on is being paid for by China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump also said he will speak to Chinese President Xi Jinping about data centers during a state visit in September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I don\u2019t blame him.
