camera policy in an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ice-body-cameras-officers-shootings-dab1b294c8dc412d9ef8557ccbebfd57\">article<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/6017489-immigration-enforcement-body-cameras-restrictions-public-footage\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/6017489-immigration-enforcement-body-cameras-restrictions-public-footage\/\">how ICE decides<\/a> what footage may be released to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Venturella alleged the report, published Friday, incorrectly portrayed a provision governing the expedited release of footage after serious injuries or deaths as a broader restriction on ICE\u2019s ability to release the recordings. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe AP fundamentally mischaracterized ICE\u2019s body-worn camera policy by conflating the expedited release of footage following a serious bodily injury or death in custody with ICE\u2019s broader authority to release body-worn camera footage,\u201d the director said in a statement. \u201cThose are distinct issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AP reported that ICE\u2019s policy, issued February 2025, states the agency will only publicize footage from serious encounters in an expedited manner if its release is deemed in the agency\u2019s \u201cbest interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The provision also specifies that the director may delay the public release of incident footage if there are \u201cspecific and compelling circumstances\u201d for doing so, according to the AP.<\/p>\n<p>The AP cited experts who argued the language could allow ICE to selectively release footage that portrays the agency favorably, while withholding footage that could generate backlash.<\/p>\n<p>Veturella rejected that characterization, saying the guideline is meant to determine whether the footage should receive an expedited release \u2014 within 72 hours of an incident \u2014 rather than establish the agency\u2019s overall authority to make recordings public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cICE policy permits expedited release when appropriate \u2014 and clarifies that it\u2019s not appropriate to release footage when doing so could compromise investigations or privacy,\u201d Venturella said. \u201cThis approach mirrors other federal law enforcement agencies\u2019 policies and is fully consistent with the Freedom of Information Act and the Privacy Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>He continued: \u201cAt the same time, we\u2019re committed to transparency and accountability, and we\u2019re on track to equip every officer and agent in the field
