Of these cases, 279 have resulted in hospitalizations and <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/6006101-michigan-cyclosporiasis-deaths-reported\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two people<\/a> have died.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cyclosporiasis is typically not deadly, and the health department noted the two deaths were tied to other preexisting health conditions. Symptoms of the illness include diarrhea, loss of appetite and other stomach-related issues.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The department said in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mdhhs\/inside-mdhhs\/newsroom\/2026\/08\/06\/mdhhs-updates-guidance-on-cyclosporiasis-outbreak-regarding-lettuce-and-salad-greens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guidance update<\/a> this week that most of the exposures to this parasite occurred in late June and early July and that most of the contaminated produce was \u201clikely no longer available for consumption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cyclosporiasis outbreak has affected U.S. residents across 47 states, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cyclosporiasis\/php\/surveillance\/index.html#cdc_generic_section_5-cases-acquired-in-the-u-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC). As of Tuesday, 10,468 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported to the CDC since May 1, including 517 hospitalizations and the two deaths in Michigan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The public health agency noted that the contraction rate of this parasite is likely much higher, pointing to more than 12,255 cases that have not been confirmed through lab testing. Many of these unconfirmed cases have come from Michigan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No specific grower has been confirmed as the source of this outbreak. Taylor Farms, a major lettuce supplier that <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/5973299-taco-bell-removes-lettuce-cyclosporiasis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">services chains<\/a> like Taco Bell, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/5975363-taylor-farms-iceberg-lettuce-cyclosporiasis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voluntarily recalled<\/a> all of its iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico on July 17. The company said it made this decision \u201cout of an abundance of caution.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Michigan residents are still encouraged to avoid recalled lettuce products, and the state health department said it will \u201ccontinue to monitor the situation closely\u201d and update health guidance if necessary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the start of this outbreak, MDHHS has remained committed to providing timely, transparent information and clear recommendations to Michigan residents,\u201d the state health department\u2019s chief medical executive, Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, said in the Thursday update. \u201cAs new data has emerged, our guidance has evolved to reflect the best available evidence, helping ensure that prevention recommendations are accurate, actionable and responsive to the changing situation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media Inc.
