In 2020, one year after The Big Bang Theory finale, CBS was leaning on Young Sheldon as its new flagship while launching several new comedies to fill out the bench.

CBS paired sitcom legend Chuck Lorre, the co-creator of TBBT, with his co-executive producer from Mom, Marco Pennette, who had a pilot script inspired by Pennette’s kidney transplant. B Positive was a charming sitcom about Drew (Thomas Middleditch), a therapist in need of a kidney transplant, and Gina (Annaleigh Ashford), the former classmate who unexpectedly volunteers to become his donor.

The series was a natural fit for CBS’ comedy brand, which likely helped it secure a second season despite never becoming a breakout hit. B Positive tackled heavy subjects with warmth and optimism instead of cynicism.

The show seemed like the kind of sitcom CBS would keep around for years. Instead, despite the network’s longstanding relationship with Chuck Lorre and the show’s strong critical reception, it was quietly canceled after just two seasons.

                        B Positive Season 2 Showed How The Series Could Be An Anthology

<picture>
        </picture>Image via Everett Collection

One of B Positive‘s smartest creative decisions was expanding its original premise. After Drew successfully received his kidney transplant in season 1, the series could have struggled to justify continuing the story. Instead, season 2 boldly shifted its focus from transplant recipient Drew to donor Gina.

Following an unexpected inheritance, Gina purchased a struggling retirement community, transforming B Positive from a high-concept sitcom about organ donation into a warm ensemble comedy. Drew remained part of the cast, but the retirement home introduced colorful new regulars played by veterans including Jane Seymour, Hector Elizondo, Ben Vereen, and Jim Beaver.

The show suddenly had a much larger world to explore, with every resident bringing a different perspective on aging, family, and finding purpose later in life. That reinvention also opened the door to an intriguing long-term future.

Rather than treating Gina and Drew as the permanent center of the series, B Positive could have embraced a semi-anthology format. Future seasons might have elevated one of the retirees into the lead role, shifted focus to one of their adult children, or introduced an entirely new resident whose arrival reshaped the community.

As long as the series maintained its optimistic outlook and lived up to its own title, there was no reason the emotional center had to remain with the same protagonists forever, as the best anthology TV shows prove. That flexibility could have helped B Positive avoid the stagnation that eventually affects many long-running sitcoms, but CBS quietly canceled it after season 2.

                        Why B Positive Was Canceled After 2 Seasons

<picture>
        </picture>Image via Everett Collection

B Positive embodied the network’s comedy brand, pairing a heartfelt premise with the warmth and optimism that have defined many of Chuck Lorre’s sitcoms. With middling ratings and controversy surrounding its original lead, B Positive no longer looked like a long-term priority for the network.

Ironically, the show’s biggest creative strength may also have underscored its uncertainty. Season 2 boldly reinvented the series after the kidney-transplant storyline had naturally reached its conclusion. Many critics appreciated the fresh direction, but the reinvention also meant B Positive was still defining its future. Rather than giving those new muscles time to grow, CBS surgically cut B Positive from its lineup.

Longevity is a blessing and a curse for network comedy.
