Scott Wiener launched the chatbot this week to mock fellow Democrat and city supervisor Connie Chan, who earned Pelosi\u2019s endorsement. Wiener and Chan will face against each other in November for Pelosi\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has endorsed Connie Chan for her seat. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A look at the chatbot targeting Chan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The website\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/conniechan.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ConnieChan.ai<\/a>\u00a0bills itself as \u201cthe world\u2019s first AI trained to say no to anything you ask,\u201d a knock on Chan\u2019s reputation among critics as a progressive NIMBY who has opposed numerous housing proposals.<\/p>\n<p>The Chan campaign unsurprisingly was not a fan of Wiener\u2019s unique campaigning tactic. Pelosi then stepped in to echo her own fury over the tactic.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWomen have spent generations fighting to have our own voices heard in the halls of power. We should not have to now fight against artificial intelligence putting words in our mouths,\u201d Pelosi said Thursday, releasing <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/teampelosi\/status\/2085488807152136474\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a long statement<\/a> with the backing of numerous female elected officials.<\/p>\n<p>The statement accuses Wiener for using AI to impersonate a female voice, which is a \u201cgross misuse of technology and reflects a disturbing willingness to erase women\u2019s agency.\u201d It further claimed that because Chan is a non-white woman, such harms \u201ccompound with racial stereotypes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wiener <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Scott_Wiener\/status\/2085568136749928618\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initially shot back <\/a>at Pelosi\u2019s cries of sexism, noting his campaign clearly labeled the chatbot as parody. He called out the former speaker for having opposed <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/07\/business\/california-lawmakers-demand-ai-firms-install-kill-switch\/\">his first-in-the-nation AI safety law<\/a> and said her claims were \u201cbaseless.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>State Senator Scott Wiener launched the parody chatbot to mock Chan.  <span class=\"credit\">Bloomberg via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis is classic deflection,\u201d he said of the attacks on the chatbot, which he insisted accurately describes Chan\u2019s problems as a candidate.<\/p>\n<p>However, Wiener ultimately decided to take the chatbot down, insisting it had only become a distraction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur use of an AI chatbot clearly missed the mark.
