The show has won 13<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/emmy\/\"> Emmys<\/a>, garnered millions of fans, and skyrocketed the careers of<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/hannah-waddingham\/\"> Hannah Waddingham<\/a>, Brett Goldstein, and Phil Dunster, to name a few.\u00a0 Meanwhile, Juno Temple found Marvel soon after her memorable depiction of fan favourite topless model-turned-PR titan, Keeley Jones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the \u2018real\u2019 Keeley, former Page 3 girl Keeley Hazell, will not be tuning in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before Ted Lasso was commissioned by Apple TV back in 2019, Keeley, 39, says she was told by her friend, writer and star<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/jason-sudeikis\/\"> of the TV show, Jason Sudeikis<\/a>, that he was working on a football<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/comedy\/\"> comedy<\/a>, and claims that he said he\u2019d written a character inspired by \u2013 and for \u2013 her. (Although Jason has never publicly commented on this.)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The character was named and based on me with the intent of me playing myself in the show,\u2019 Keeley explains to <strong>Metro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The model couldn\u2019t believe her luck. Having completed her last Page 3 outing a decade prior and hungry to act, she felt sure that her \u2018entire career would have changed\u2019 if she\u2019d been given the part.<\/p>\n<p>However, as production began, Keeley was told it wasn\u2019t guaranteed. She\u2019d need to try out for the part because of \u2018the powers that be in the industry\u2019.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"339\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SEI_307541683-7e53.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29316106\" alt=\"Keeley Hazell in Ted Lasso\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Bex is introduced in Ted Lasso season one as the new girlfriend of Rupert Mannion (Anthony Head) (Picture: Apple TV)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018I had to audition because I didn\u2019t have the resume that would allow me to just be given the part \u2013 even though it was named and based on me with the intent of me playing myself,\u2019 remembers Keeley,\u00a0 who\u2019s gearing up to take her first show, Everyone\u2019s Seen My Tits (based loosely on her autobiography), to Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018During that process, they went out on a direct offer to the actress who plays the part. It was devastating,\u2019 she adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That actress was Juno Temple, who had already starred in Atonement, Dirty John, Maleficent, Wild Child, and St Trinians and had grown up around the film industry \u2013 even reportedly having<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/johnny-depp\/\"> Johnny Depp<\/a> as a babysitter for her film director dad Julien Temple and producer mother Amanda Temple.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It stung for a variety of reasons,\u2019 Keeley admits. \u2018It was based on her having more experience, and I think when one examines that, the easy answer \u2013 and what I think the general public go to \u2013 is the devaluing of me and maybe my skill set versus the examining of how Hollywood operates and how one is allowed experience and one gains experience. It\u2019s sort of a catch 22. You know, maybe having parents in the industry as the actress who plays Keeley does.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SEI_307488348-09db.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29323616\" alt=\"Juno Temple at Variety x Apple TV's 'Ted Lasso' New York Screening and Q&amp;A held at Quality Italian on August 05, 2026 in New York, New York. (Photo by Kristina Bumphrey\/Variety via Getty Images)\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Juno Temple ended up being cast as Keeley in the Apple TV show (Picture: Kristina Bumphrey\/Variety via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As Ted Lasso fans know, that wasn\u2019t the end of Keeley\u2019s relationship with the show, as she went on to star in seven episodes in a more minor role. \u2018I have scenes with her [Juno], we\u2019ve met, and she\u2019s a fantastic, wonderful woman,\u2019 adds Keeley. \u2018You can\u2019t blame an actress for taking a part. No hard feelings against her at all.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even so, losing out on the role still smarts, she admits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To understand why, it\u2019s worth looking at Keeley\u2019s upbringing and early career. She got into modelling to escape an abusive and turbulent childhood, growing up in a council estate in South East London. While many girls were asking their parents about periods at 13, Keeley tried crack cocaine. At 18, she was in The Sun topless for around 3.9million people, having won their Page 3 Idol competition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We really didn\u2019t have any money. I left school aged 16 to get a job and my prospects were quite slim. So modelling and Page 3 became a route in which I could advance socially and make money that I wouldn\u2019t in any other way,\u2019 she explains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"968\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SEI_307623818-e3e5.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29323609\" alt=\"Keeley Hazell (Picture: Guy Lowndes)\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Keeley\u2019s debut show Everyone\u2019s Seen My Tits is showing at Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Picture: Guy Lowndes)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the time, Keeley insisted it was empowering, but later revealed she\u2019d lied about her true feelings to keep her male fans and to carry on getting work. The reality was she felt ashamed and objectified.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It was fun and exciting in this whole new world that I had never been exposed to, but yet in the same breath, it\u2019s also f**king crazy that there was a topless model on the third page of a newspaper,\u2019 Keeley laughs.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I think the objectification that comes with that and the misogynistic messaging it gives out, I struggle with. And also the age. It\u2019s crazy to me that some of these models were 16 and then when I modelled, I had just turned 18. I\u2019m a teenager.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018In that regard, I think there\u2019s such a profound exploitation \u2013 and that\u2019s really hard to reconcile with.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Page 3 modelling changed how the world perceives Keeley Hazell \u2013 a persona crafted largely by men to make money \u2013 and this bled into her work, relationships and life. It might have been why it was so hard for Keeley to pivot into acting after her modelling days. While<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/katie-price\/\"> Katie Price<\/a> had the modelling moniker Jordan to separate her from other pursuits, Keeley Hazell had\u2026 Keeley Hazell.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SEI_307260198-cf44.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29293924\" alt=\"Undated Handout Photo from Ted Lasso Season 4. They would Google me and ask \u201care you a porn star?\u201d\u2019 Keeley remembers. \u2018It definitely stopped me getting a lot of jobs because there is just so much stigma against women who are nude or present themself in such a way, and that\u2019s just the misogynistic nature or the reality of being a woman.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Keeley\u2019s relationship with her body as a result of modelling, is one of detachment, she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018As I\u2019ve gotten older, I understand how much physicality plays into my desirability and so that has had some bearing. Also, just the attention it can render, do I really want that attention?\u2019\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fame was never more distressing than in 2007, when Keeley\u2019s unnamed abusive ex-boyfriend stole a sex tape from her home and leaked it to the press.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In response to this, Keeley decided to be open with the public about her traumas in a bid to reclaim her own narrative.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"969\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SEI_307623714-0402.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29323610\" alt=\"Keeley Hazell (Picture: Guy Lowndes)\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>\u2018No, Apple is really expensive, so I don\u2019t think I\u2019m going to be watching it. I mean, you have to be wealthy to have a subscription to Apple, right?\u2019\u00a0(Picture: Guy Lowndes)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018I do sometimes go back and forth on that and wonder if I should be exposing myself in such a way?\u2019 she asks, still toying with the answer. \u2018But in order to have agency over one\u2019s life and the things that have happened, you have to speak towards it.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Given the history of her public persona, it\u2019s understandable why Keeley finds the concept of the Ted Lasso character adopting her name \u2018challenging\u2019. Add to this that Keeley was then cast in the show as the relatively minor character of Bex, the girlfriend of playboy Rupert Mannion, played by the late Anthony Head.<\/p>\n<p>Her experience on set wasn\u2019t exactly the fun-loving Lasso-esque locker room the show celebrates, she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I think [working on the show] was incredibly complicated for me,\u2019 Keeley reflects. \u2018It was like having a crumb of a cake, right? Somebody\u2019s got the cake and so my options were to take crumbs and be a part of it or not at all, when it\u2019s going to happen with or without me. So yes, it was incredibly complex, but also what a great experience to be a part of such a phenomenal show.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Once on set, Keeley was asked if she wanted to talk to Juno about her Keeley and was asked what her accent was and \u2018all sorts of things\u2019 to help with characterisation. And then there were these like chicken fillets, and I was giving them to somebody else for her to emulate me,\u2019 she recalls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So what was the verdict? Does Keeley see any of herself in Juno\u2019s Keeley?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Yes,\u2019 she says, amused. \u2018And yes, I find it incredibly irritating. But it\u2019s also just somebody else\u2019s idea, or the sides of me that they have seen, and decided to enhance.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Sure, I definitely see elements of myself \u2013 even though I find them incredibly annoying.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While she can identify parts of herself in Lasso\u2019s Keeley, the former glamour model has also been somewhat left behind, while her namesake soars to stardom.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SEI_87729731-1eb8.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29323650\" alt=\"This image released by Apple TV+ shows Juno Temple in a scene from \" ted=\"\" lasso.=\"\" season=\"\" two=\"\" premieres=\"\" on=\"\" july=\"\" tv=\"\" via=\"\" ap=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Keeley stopped wearing her favourite necklace because the character wears it in the show (Picture: Colin Hutton\/Apple TV Plus via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018A theme of the Edinburgh Fringe show is that there\u2019s a persona created for me that\u2019s out of my control and a character that\u2019s created based on me which is also out of my control, and I\u2019m voiceless with it,\u2019 she says. \u2018It\u2019s an exploration of class, identity, and erasure.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So much so, that Keeley has stopped wearing her favourite necklace after Ted Lasso took that part of her and blew it up on the big screen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The character wears my gold Keeley name necklace that I wore for many, many years,\u2019 she explains, searching for the words to explain why this was problematic for her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The name necklace is a representation of identity based on names that aren\u2019t as common; you can\u2019t get them on mugs when you go places in Spain. Where the name necklace originates from is a very working-class representation. So for it to be on the character, it\u2019s almost like, oh, this is taking something without understanding its meaning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019m representing something and this character has become almost bigger than me and much more well known \u2013 and the actress playing her makes s**t ton of money, is nominated for an Emmy, while the show\u2019s become incredibly wealthy and famous, and I haven\u2019t had the same experience.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I ask Keeley if she will be watching the new season of Ted Lasso, out on August 5.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018No, Apple is really expensive, so I don\u2019t think I\u2019m going to be watching it. I mean, you have to be wealthy to have a subscription to Apple, right?\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Metro contacted representatives of Ted Lasso for comment.
