(Ed Reed\/Mayoral Photography Office)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/news\/local-news\/new-lawsuit-seeks-to-make-e-bike-traffic-violations-criminal-again-in-nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">speed limit for e-bikes in New York City<\/a> is 15 mph. The maximum speed allowance must be under 20 to 25 mph, depending on the bike. Scooters can\u2019t weigh more than 100 pounds or go more than 20 mph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s be clear, these are motorcycles being marketed to New Yorkers as bicycles,\u201d said Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn.<\/p>\n<p>The actions come a week after 17-year-old Gabriel Nacato was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/news\/local-news\/manhattan\/teen-cyclist-killed-after-suv-crash-in-manhattan-nypd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fatally struck by an SUV while riding an e-bike<\/a>\u00a0in Lower Manhattan. He was on his way from Bensonhurst to fill out summer job applications with a career counselor, Mamdani said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe vehicle he was riding is capable of reaching more than 30 miles per hour, a speed that should never be reached in our bike lanes,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Amazon responds to Mamdani\u2019s cease-and-desist<\/h2>\n<p>A spokesperson for Amazon told Nexstar\u2019s WPIX that the trillion-dollar corporation will be \u201clooking into the products in question\u201d and has no issue working with the mayor and City Council to get it right. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafety is a top priority and we require e-bikes sold in our store to meet applicable safety standards and Amazon policies,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>Target has yet to respond to WPIX\u2019s request for comment on the matter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media Inc.
