Members fight back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-element=\"story-body\" data-subscriber-content=\"\">\n<p>They lit candles, grasped rosaries and passed out poster boards and N-95 masks. <\/p>\n<p>The 50 or so people gathered in front of Resurrection Church in Boyle Heights on Wednesday evening were getting ready to pray and fight for the Eastside once again.<\/p>\n<p>For generations, the 103-year-old Catholic parish has been a beacon of solace and resistance for residents angry about the latest indignity to befall the historic heart of Latino Los Angeles. <\/p>\n<p>The Lineage warehouse fire, which erupted a mile away nearly two months ago, still blankets the church every morning with the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-07-23\/lineage-warehouse-boyle-heights-conditions\">fetid stench of millions of pounds of rotting food<\/a> that have yet to be trucked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pray because we have suffered for a century due to environmental racism,\u201d said Sofia Quinones from the podium during the vigil. Around her stood people in T-shirts with the same illustration featured on the church\u2019s bulletin that week: a phoenix representing Boyle Heights rising from the flames of a hellish warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Quinones paused for a few seconds as a loudspeaker crackling from an LAPD helicopter circling a few streets over ordered a shooting suspect to turn themselves in. \u201cWe ask that you open the hearts and mind of the powerful,\u201d she continued. \u201cWe ask you, Lord, to help us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The faithful recited the Lord\u2019s Prayer and a Hail Mary. Then, they marched from the Resurrection entrance to the school\u2019s multipurpose room for a <i>pl\u00e1tica<\/i>, or teach-in, on Lineage, singing in Spanish a song based on the 118th Psalm:<\/p>\n<p><i>This is the day that the Lord has made<\/i><br \/><i>Family of happiness<\/i><br \/><i>Pueblo of happiness and joy<\/i><br \/><i>Let\u2019s walk to the meeting of the Lord<\/i><\/p>\n<p>It was a stirring sight \u2014 and yet a sad one. If Resurrection Church is famed in Catholic and activist circles across Southern California, it\u2019s because parishioners over the decades have had to deal with afflictions on the level of Job. <\/p>\n<p>A proposed prison <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1986-07-11-mn-19988-story.html\">off Olympic Boulevard<\/a>. <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2026-04-11\/lead-still-haunts-yards-in-exide-battery-recycler-cleanup-zone\">Lead-spewing plants<\/a>. <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1993-11-07-ci-54890-story.html\">Gang violence<\/a>. <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2009-dec-05-la-me-wyvernwood5-2009dec05-story.html\">Gentrification<\/a>. The COVID-19 pandemic. ICE raids. Now, a burnt-out putrid warehouse <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-08-04\/la-city-county-officials-recovery-boyle-heights-warehouse-fire\">that has devastated businesses<\/a> and forced residents to remain inside their homes during a sweltering summer, as <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-07-23\/lineage-warehouse-boyle-heights-conditions\">flies and giant rats<\/a> infest the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kinda crazy what this parish has gone through,\u201d said Father Jorge Moncada, who didn\u2019t know about Resurrection\u2019s history until he arrived last year on his first assignment as a priest. \u201cThey\u2019ve been through a lot and carried a lot of burden. But they\u2019ve responded, they have risen to fight against injustice again and again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 29-year-old Moncada is quickly learning the ways of Resurrection under the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-05-28\/boyle-heights-priest-irks-politicians-fights-for-flock\">legendary Monsignor John Moretta<\/a>, better known as Padre Juan. Earlier in the day, he and a busload of parishioners had testified at a South Coast Air Quality Management District hearing <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-08-06\/air-regulators-take-action-on-lineage-stench-complaints\">about how the Lineage fire had impacted their lives<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time I think the problems are done, they start popping up again,\u201d Moretta said. \u201cBut I\u2019m an idealist. I can never live all these years in this parish if I weren\u2019t an idealist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I scoffed. You really think things have improved in Boyle Heights despite the nonstop procession of problems, Monsignor?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he replied, \u201cI <i>know<\/i> so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Resurrection\u2019s battles read like a history of <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/newsletter\/2024-02-27\/latino-political-power-los-angeles-essential-california-essential-california\">modern-day Latino politics in Los Angeles<\/a>. The Mothers of East Los Angeles \u2014 <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1989-08-13-me-816-story.html\">the legendary women\u2019s group<\/a> that took on Eastside politicos in the 1980s and 1990s \u2014 was born in Resurrection\u2019s pews. Members had fought off plans for toxic waste incinerators and power plants. Politicians from the late L.A. County Supervisor <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-05-28\/gloria-molina-funeral-resurrection-church\">Gloria Molina<\/a> to former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to L.A. City Councilmember Ysabel Jurado have sought Moretta\u2019s counsel and helped parishioners in their various crusades.<\/p>\n<p>Former Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo remembers being \u201cwowed\u201d when she held a community forum at Resurrection in 2016 that drew hundreds of people. They were outraged about the lack of government accountability <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-exide-schools-parks-20161117-story.html\">surrounding the closure of the Exide battery recycling plant<\/a> in nearby Vernon that had contaminated thousands of homes. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was both inspiring and surprising to see how quickly [the Resurrection] community organized around this issue,\u201d said Carrillo, whose home parish is another historic Boyle Heights progressive powerhouse, Dolores Mission.<\/p>\n<p>She credited Moretta for allowing Resurrection to flower but also noted that what makes the parish more activist than most of its Eastside sister churches is its proximity to unincorporated East Los Angeles, which is governed by the county.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have two groups of people with very different political representation fighting to be seen,\u201d Carrillo said, decrying <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-07-10\/lineage-fire-town-hall-response\">the game of hot potato that has emerged among Eastside elected officials<\/a> in the aftermath of the Lineage fiasco. \u201cCommunity doesn\u2019t see that invisible border, but it feels it. That makes people want to be seen and work for a common goal, and Resurrection lives it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moretta is <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-05-28\/boyle-heights-priest-irks-politicians-fights-for-flock\">10 years past the customary retirement age for Catholic priests<\/a>. He has no plans to stop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s easy for me to stay in this nice, air-conditioned room, know what I mean?\u201d he joked. \u201cBut you gotta get your hands dirty out there. I think that that\u2019s what\u2019s the call [is] to be from God, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moncada agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe [priests] are <i>in persona Christi<\/i>,\u201d the Mexico City native said, referring to the Catholic concept of representing God and Christ in actions and words. \u201cAnd if our people are in need, that\u2019s what we should do \u2014 because that\u2019s what Jesus would have done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He and Moretta joined their flock at the vigil but couldn\u2019t attend the town hall that followed, led by Alma Marquez, founder of the Protect LA Now coalition <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/newsletter\/2026-07-25\/mandatory-evacuation-help-eastside-neighbors-of-lineage-fire\">that has become one of the most vocal critics of the Lineage response<\/a>. The Huntington Park native and Monterey Park resident has participated in Resurrection campaigns since she was a teenager and was so inspired by the community\u2019s witness to social justice that her daughter had her First Communion there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen this [Lineage fire] started, I called Father John and said we needed to do something,\u201d Marquez said in a phone interview. \u201cHe was very clear this is going to be a long fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She and her daughter have not lived in their home since the Lineage fire. People vented. They wept. They took notes. They organized. <\/p>\n<p>They were first-timers and long-timers, old and young, and even non-believers like Dolores Mejia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the essence of good here,\u201d the 62-year-old retired teacher\u2019s assistant told me after the session. \u201cIt\u2019s everything that would bring me back to the Catholic Church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia Rios is a parishioner at Our Lady of Victory in East Los Angeles who stopped attending her regular 1 p.m. Sunday mass there because the smell from the Lineage warehouse is overwhelming. The 32-year-old is a member of the parish\u2019s Guadalupana committee, which organizes the festivities and prayers around the Virgin of Guadalupe\u2019s feast day every December. Rios drew cheers from Marquez and others when she vowed to connect with other Guadalupanos on the Eastside to organize a march against Lineage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re able to get a lot of people for Her,\u201d Rios said in Spanish afterward, \u201cand we can do the same for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nearby, Maria E. Morales \u2014 who led the procession from Resurrection\u2019s steps to the multipurpose room \u2014 passed out fliers and talked to fellow parishioners who wanted to get more involved. The 69-year-old cancer survivor has attended Mass at Resurrection since she arrived in the U.S. from Mexico in 1982 and even after she moved from Boyle Heights to City Terrace in the 1990s. She listed off all the past actions she has participated in. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have awakened so many people, but there\u2019s so many more people to awaken,\u201d Morales said in Spanish. \u201cMy dad always said that without God, we\u2019re nothing and not going anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked how this go-around differed from previous ones. Morales looked around the now-empty room.
