Here is my statement,\u201d she prefaced on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DbsYNutjfdp\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Instagram<\/a>. \u201c<em>Cartwheel<\/em> is a show about motherhood, raising a daughter in a world that is unfair and dangerous for women, and what it costs to be the kind of mother who tells her the truth about that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNeither the author of this petition nor anyone who signed it has seen <em>Cartwheel<\/em>. The petition contains many false assumptions and completely mischaracterizes the show. <em>Cartwheel<\/em> honors Meredith Kercher\u2019s memory and calls out the violence that was done to her and to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knox continued, \u201cA petition to cancel a show no one has seen, on the grounds of false accusations intended to shame and vilify a wronged woman into silence, is not an argument against <em>Cartwheel<\/em>. It\u2019s a fairly precise description of what <em>Cartwheel<\/em> is about and why it deserves to exist. And the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/edinburgh-fringe\/\" id=\"auto-tag_edinburgh-fringe\" data-tag=\"edinburgh-fringe\">Edinburgh Fringe<\/a> is the perfect place for a show like this.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMany of the Fringe\u2019s most celebrated comedy shows tackle difficult subjects including grief, trauma, mental health, addiction, illness, identity, and politics. Comics rarely treat these experiences lightly or make them the butt of the joke. Instead, they use comedy as a way to explore them, creating space for audiences to engage with complex ideas, connect through shared experience, and find moments of relief, perspective and hope in subjects that might otherwise feel overwhelming,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Started by Sally Alington, a former friend and co-worker of Kercher, the Change.org <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/stop-the-amanda-knox-cartwheel-performance-at-the-edinburgh-fringe\">petition<\/a> said the show \u201cmocks the horrific events surrounding Meredith\u2019s murder and aims to somehow turn this tragedy into entertainment,\u201d calling for Fringe to \u201cwithdraw their support for this performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Fringe Society director Tony Lankester told BBC Radio Scotland the festival is \u201cnot afraid of controversy,\u201d but the decision ultimately lies with the venue. A rep for the Gilded Balloon Teviot, which will host Cartwheel from Aug. 7-17, said they aim to \u201cprovide a platform for a wide range of voices, in line with the Fringe\u2019s longstanding commitment to freedom of expression,\u201d and will allow Knox\u2019s show to continue as scheduled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Knox was convicted of Kercher\u2019s murder in 2009 and sentenced to 26 years in prison, the conviction was overturned in 2011 and she was fully acquitted in 2015.
