Among Gen Z, that figure climbs to 82%. A separate <a href=\"https:\/\/money.usnews.com\/loans\/personal-loans\/articles\/2024-pet-debt-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. News survey<\/a> found the same share, 76%, saying they had already done it.<\/p>\n<p>The devotion isn\u2019t in question. What is in question is whether the math ever worked in the first place.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key findings<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>76% of U.S. pet owners say they would take on debt to save their pet\u2019s life, rising to 82% of Gen Z<\/li>\n<li>Pet owners say they can absorb about $2,818 in emergency vet costs before borrowing<\/li>\n<li>Emergency surgeries for dogs and cats commonly start at $4,000 to $5,000<\/li>\n<li>53% of pet owners couldn\u2019t cover a $1,000 pet emergency without taking on debt<\/li>\n<li>Most <a href=\"https:\/\/services.nypost.com\/pr\/qfbd4d797c78?s1=hpi9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">pet insurance<\/a> reimburses after the fact, so owners still pay the vet upfront<\/li>\n<li>Most veterinary hospitals no longer offer in-house payment plans, pushing owners to third-party financing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How much can pet owners afford before going into debt?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s the number that actually explains the pet debt problem: Pet owners say they can spend an average of about $2,818 on a pet\u2019s emergency medical costs before taking on debt. Treatment costs per Dr. Zac Pilossoph and Dr. Mathieu Glassman.<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking in ER predominantly, I rarely create estimates for gold-standard services that fall below $500 for the most basic of care, with most initial estimates falling in the range of $1,200 to $2,500 for a basic workup and outpatient care,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dr-zac-pilossoph-fear-free-dvm-cmft-cavm-integrative-vet-doc-369905b3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Zac Pilossoph<\/a>, an emergency and integrative medicine veterinarian who consults for <a href=\"https:\/\/services.nypost.com\/pr\/qfbd4d797c78?s1=hpi9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">Healthy Paws<\/a>. And that\u2019s before treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor basic hospitalization 1 to 2 days, those numbers usually double easily,\u201d Pilossoph said. \u201cFor surgeries or critically ill patients, almost never will you see an estimate less than $4,000 to $5,000, with most being somewhere in the range of $5,000 to $10,000-plus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Put those two figures side by side, and the picture is stark. The average owner\u2019s ceiling is roughly $2,800. The floor for a real surgical emergency is $4,000. The debt isn\u2019t a failure of planning so much as a structural gap, and it opens the moment something goes wrong.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/friendshiphospital.com\/meet-our-doctors\/mathieu-glassman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Mathieu Glassman<\/a>, a veterinary surgeon in Washington, D.C., and the creator of <a href=\"https:\/\/drcuddles.com\/products\/readyrescue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">ReadyRESCUE<\/a>, sees where that gap lands. A torn ACL, \u201cthe most common orthopedic disease in dogs,\u201d runs \u201capproximately $7,000 to $10,000 by the time the animal is healed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign body surgery, when a dog swallows something it shouldn\u2019t, runs \u201capproximately $8,000 to $15,000-plus depending on how sick the animal is or how much damage is done to the intestines.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why don\u2019t vets offer payment plans for emergency bills?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s a mechanical reason vet debt shows up as consumer debt rather than a payment plan. Veterinary hospitals mostly can\u2019t extend credit themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVet hospitals no longer offer in-house payment plans, with rare exceptions, as there is too high of a risk of never receiving subsequent payments,\u201d Pilossoph said. What\u2019s left is third-party financing: CareCredit, ScratchPay, Cherry, Affirm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/Dochalligan.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Karen \u201cDoc\u201d Halligan<\/a>, a practicing veterinarian and surgeon with more than 35 years of experience, points to the structural difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike human hospitals, veterinary hospitals generally cannot provide long-term payment plans because they don\u2019t receive government reimbursement or insurance payments,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Those third-party options work, but they carry teeth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPet owners should read all the fine print with these payment plans carefully,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/noahshospitals.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Dock<\/a>, director of communications at Noah\u2019s Animal Hospitals. \u201cSome may charge high rates of interest if the payments go behind the specified time frame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even insurance doesn\u2019t fully solve the cash-flow problem in the moment. Most policies reimburse rather than pay directly. As Dock put it, \u201cyou still need to pay the veterinarian upfront.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the part owners rarely anticipate. U.S. News found that among owners who borrowed, average balances reached $3,167 when the pet had a chronic illness, compared with $2,269 for healthy pets \u2014 proof that the debt tends to compound over months of management, not just one bad night.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/services.nypost.com\/pr\/qfbd4d797c78?s1=hpi9\" target=\"_blank\" this and responding to it differently.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, 45% of Gen Z owners spent $2,000 or more on their pet, compared with just 15% of Baby Boomers, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthypawspetinsurance.com\/blog\/pet-insurance-101\/generational-differences-pet-care-insurance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Healthy Paws research<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>That pressure appears to be reshaping behavior: 28% of Gen Z say pet ownership has influenced their financial planning or savings goals, versus 10% of Boomers. <\/p>\n<p>About half of Gen Z owners currently carry pet insurance, compared with roughly one in 10 Boomers.<\/p>\n<p>The comparison is rather striking when set side-by-side.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n<table uninsured among them isn\u2019t price. Only 18% of uninsured Gen Z owners cite expensive premiums, compared with 41% of Boomers. Instead, 22% say they didn\u2019t know pet insurance existed, and 28% simply haven\u2019t gotten around to it. Nearly four in 10 say they\u2019re likely to buy a policy within the next year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a
