No one died, but some came close.<\/p>\n<p><!-- END CLASS=\"CONTAINER SMALL\" ID=\"CONNX-S1-5874719-100\" --><\/p>\n<p>Follow-up testing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wypr.org\/wypr-news\/2025-07-18\/second-large-overdose-hits-baltimores-penn-north-neighborhood\" target=\"_blank\">found<\/a> that the street drugs <a href=\"https:\/\/health.maryland.gov\/pha\/NALOXONE\/Documents\/RAD\/Reports\/2025-08-15_RAD-Newsletter-CY25-Q2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">contained high levels<\/a> of N-methylclonazepam, a benzodiazepine that operates similarly to Xanax or Valium. <\/p>\n<p>Like opioids, benzodiazepines suppress breathing. When they&#8217;re combined, the <a href=\"https:\/\/opioidresponsenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/N-Methylclonazepam-overview.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">risk of overdose<\/a> goes up. And benzodiazepines don&#8217;t respond to opioid overdose reversal drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoreharmreduction.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Baltimore Harm Reduction Coalition<\/a> created test strips specifically for benzodiazepines. The group distributed them \u2014 along with test strips that identify other harmful adulterants, such as fentanyl, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/08\/13\/1191389152\/xylazine-fentanyl-wounds-treatment\" target=\"_blank\">xylazine<\/a>, and medetomidine \u2014 at clinics and neighborhood events. <\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The strips, available at no cost, can also be found in bars and spread out on street corners. People testing drugs mix a small amount with water and then dip a test strip into the liquid. medications like naloxone. She believes that working on all fronts has helped lead to Baltimore&#8217;s decline in overdose deaths, which have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebanner.com\/community\/public-health\/baltimore-decline-drug-overdose-deaths-challenges-ZI7EYPYFTZD2VPLXJKBS4WASJI\/\" target=\"_blank\">dropped<\/a> more than 40% since 2023.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-third-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap third\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Under the new policy, nonprofits will still be able to hand out test strips, but they will have to find other funding for that work, which Kerr finds worrisome.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve been making these strides forward because we&#8217;ve had these things, because we&#8217;ve been funded,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to have to pull money from other places.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To pay for the test strips, Kerr said, the Baltimore Harm Reduction Coalition will have to cut back on services such as giving out hygiene and wound care kits.
